Dream start to 2012 for Town

G By John Butterfield

uisborough Town FC had a dream start to 2012 shipping in seven goals and winning six points in their first two games of the New Year. They surprised Newcastle Benfield with a 2-3 victory on Bank Holiday avenging the defeat suffered on the Priorymens’ opening First Division game back in August. This was swiftly followed by the Priorymen sinking the Mariners of South Shields with a 3-4 scoreline. The Shields victory was even more rewarding, given that the top scorers were not playing due to suspension and injury and it was left to young Nathan Steel to make his first ever First Division goal and then double his tally along with Jamie Poole making his debut goal for Guisborough. Mikey Roberts scored what was to be the winning goal.

The Evening Gazette referred to an imaginery League table of the six teams judged to be classed as Teesside teams and the table is led by Guisborough Town with 12pts having only lost against one other Teesside team but winning three and drawing three. Second and third in this table are Billingham Town and Norton both on 10pts. Billingham Synthonia seem to be the draw merchants having three draws of which two of these were against Guisborough and winning one. Marske are second bottom on 5pts with one win and two draws and losses. Their only Teesside win was against the bottom team Stokesley who are at the foot of the real Northern League table which paints a completely different picture otherwise as Marske and Synthonia are above Guisborough Town in reality.

The seven games in December had seen a mixed bag of results with draws against Billingham Synthonia, Ashington and Marske United. No points were gained against Bishop Auckland, Shildon and Norton & Stockton Ancients and only one win in December against

an improved Stokesley. The Ashington game at the KGV drew a bumper crowd aided by the appearance of many of the Junior Section and Middlesbrough mascot Roary the Lion along with a flag competition. More events featuring the Junior Section are planned for the remainder of the season and will be recorded here or on one of the two web sites www.guisboroughtownfc.co.uk or http://www. clubwebsite.co.uk/guisboroughtownfc01. The rest of this month features three home games at Howlbeck Road starting with Saturday 14th with the Railwaymen of Shildon who have already beaten the Priorymen twice this season in the League and FA Cup. A much anticipated North Riding Senior Cup tie on Wednesday 18th at the KGV when Redcar Athletic visit at the Quarter Final stage hoping to beat the current Cup holders. Both teams enjoyed high scoring games in the previous round with the holders shocking Scarborough Athletic 5-1 and Redcar one goal shorter when they demolished North Ormesby 4-1. The winners of this game will play either Middlesbrough, York City, Stokesley, Grangetown Boys or Pickering in the Semi Final stage. Kick off will be 7.30pm and a bumper crowd expected. The last game in January is on the last Saturday 28th when Dunston UTS are the visitors.

Social functions are being arranged such as a Ceilidh for St Patricks Day with most of the profits going to one of the new Junior sides - the under 9 B team. On the night there will be the fabulous Teesside Fettlers. Tickets are very limited and available from Linda on 07907734405. A sports evening is also taking place on Thursday 2nd February with Jan Mølby and Josh Daniels. The tables sold out within a few days but some tickets have now become available and can be reserved through Chris Garbutt on 07979805780.

York in the semi-final of the North Riding Cup. Most of the girls were nervous before kick off and with good reason. Poppleton were fitter, faster and determined catching Redcar out on the break with a well taken goal, but indomitable Redcar rolled up their sleeves and struck back within ten minutes, with a great cross from Beth to Ellie Turner who finished with a low hard strike, game on! Redcar started the brighter in the second half but once again Poppleton’s speed and quick passing caught Redcar out 2-1. Again Redcar kept their cool and it was only a matter of time before hard working Chelsea levelled the scores with a brilliant individual effort beating two defenders to shoot from an almost impossible angle to make

it 2-2. There only looked like one winner after that, Redcar set up camp in Poppleton’s half but then another break away resulted in a corner which wasn’t cleared and once again Redcar had work to do 3-2. Minutes later Poppleton broke again and scored only for it to be ruled out for off-side. This was to kick start Redcar, Beth Enderwick received the ball just over the half way line under pressure and back to goal, turned, lost her player, shot and scored, wonder goal 3-3. From the resulting kick off Redcar quickly gained possession again with Chelsea chasing down to earn a corner, A perfect corner from Gabz on to Emily’s head was pushed by the keeper on to the bar which dropped to Beth’s feet for a simple tap in, Redcar

Marske United’s Merry Christmas

By Moss Holtby

orthern League division one side Marske United stretched their unbeaten run in the league to eight matches over the festive period, and moved to within three points of the top half of the table. A wind-spoilt 0-0 draw at home to

Wembley heroes Whitley Bay was followed up by a decent 1-1 at local rivals Guisborough Town on Boxing Day and a 2-1 home win over Tow Law Town a week later. On Boxing Day, Marske should have had the game sewn up in the first half as they dominated play with the wind behind them but couldn’t take the chances that came to them. Karl Charlton had an effort cleared off the line with just three minutes gone, and Derek Bradley poked an effort just wide moments later.

The Priorymen came into the game more after the break, and after Bradley squandered a good one-on-one opportunity for Marske, the home side broke down the other end to lead through former Seasider Austin Johnston. But Marske weren’t to be outdone, and with ten minutes left Chris McGill rounded the keeper before setting up fellow substitute Rob Jones to equalise.

United started the new year with a 2-1 home win against Tow Law Town to move up to 13th in the table having not lost since 8th November. Marske were slow out of the blocks as the Lawyers went close to opening the scoring three times in the opening ten minutes. But once Marske got going, they were soon into the lead as Chris McGill scored from a corner following a scramble in the box.

Chances were hard to come by in the second half, but Tommy Marron grabbed his first goal for the club with ten minutes left after the Tow Law keeper gifted him possession and he keep his composure to lob the ball into the net from 30 yards out. To their credit the visitors kept going until the end and grabbed a consolation goal in injury time through

Marske finally tasted defeat on January 6th when a strong Middlesbrough Reserve team won 4-0 at the GER Stadium in the quarter final of the North Riding Senior Cup. Boro manager Tony Mowbray watched the action from the stands amongst a bumper crowd of 419, as the blustery conditions made life difficult for both sides.

All of the goals came in the second half of the tie after a tense first 45 minutes ended goalless. Steve Agnew’s Boro XI coped better when they had the wind behind their backs after half- time, and Kieran Edwards eventually broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute with a well-directed free-kick. Paul Weldon doubled Boro’s lead in the 68th minute with a long-range shot that Graeme Willey got a hand to but couldn’t keep out, and Brunto Pilatos made it 3-0 with a 73rd minute free-kick that took a deflection off the defensive wall.

Sub Jake Fowler wrapped up the scoring in the 86th minute when he latched onto a long pass and skipped around Willey, who had raced out of his box but failed to intercept the ball, and the Boro youngster directed an accurate low shot into the empty net.

On Saturday Marske travel to Spennymoor

Town, and a week later (Saturday 4th February) they host league leaders Sunderland Ryhope CA at the GER Stadium. 3pm kick-off.

were in the lead for the first time 4-3. Poppleton kicked off in shock, Emily won the ball back easily with a simple pass to Beth who then put a great ball down the wing for Gabz to run on to, but she still had a lot to do beating two players and then the keeper sealing their place in the final for the second year in a row. Girl of the match Beth Enderwick, Chelsea Fields a close second.
