A need for cultural sensitivity training for sports leagues around the world…
By Leslie Koroma
In 1947 the United States went through a watershed moment when Jackie Robinson took the pitch in a national major league baseball game, the first time a Black player was allowed to play along with white players on the same pitch in America’s national past time and favorite sport, a sport that had been segregated since the 1880’s.
Since that day in 1947 when Jackie Robinson broke that racial barrier, sports has been going through a transformation mirroring society at large in the USA. However not to be naïve here, there are still vestiges of racism that prevail but tolerance is the norm rather than outright or institutionalized racism as is evidence in many situations across the board in societies across America. Many minorities are in positions they are today because of progress made since Jackie Robinson’s defining moment in sports in 1947 and the Civil Rights act adopted and ratified by the United States Congress and signed into law by President Lyndon B Johnson in 1965.
