KEVIN PRINCE BOATENG’S RETIREMENT FROM INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL

It came as a shock to the football world that Ghana’s Kevin Prince Boateng has decided to retire from International football at the age of just 24 recently. For me it was not a surprise. He gave as valid reason as to why he has decided to retire, which were the injuries he has suf-

fered in his short football career and the exercise/fitness regime he needs to follow in order to get fit. For African players who play in Europe, it is always a risk going to play for their countries especially where issues of insurance come in. Things are not quite as organized in Europe, where if a player is injured on international duty their country is liable to pay com- pensation to the club.

Michael Essien has had his fair share of injuries playing for Ghana and is attempting to make another comeback for his club Chelsea in December. It is feared that due to the number of knee injuries he has had over the years, he may never be the same again and there is a chance he might need to retire soon from football altogether. So knowing what I know, I do not share the same opinion of football critics who feel that Kevin Prince Boateng is retiring prematurely from international football. Yes it is an honour to play for your country but it should not be at the detriment
