November Chief Black Dog

The Scent of Popcorn is in the Air…and in your van...and your garage! The popcorn sale is wrapping up. All through the month of October, Scouts knocked on doors, called great aunts and uncles and went to mom and dads’ offices selling the aromatic popcorn we all love to eat. Orders are due on November 1.

On November 18, all units who sold popcorn will be able to pick up their product at Dakota Electric in Farmington. The pick up times have been sent to you in the mail. Please plan accordingly and bring enough vehicles to get your entire product home.

Questions? Call or email Mark Meffert at 651-456-9420 or mmeffert@msn.com, or Kirk Heimstead at 651-254-9130 or kheimstead@northernstarbsa.org.

2011 Friends of Scouting The Friends of Scouting has begun! We’re off to a great start! This year brings some exciting changes in the campaign. John Herron will coordinate all units.

He will be your point of contact for the 2011 campaign. Look to hear from him to record your unit presentation date and as your unit presentation nears.

Our goal by the end of November is to have 100% unit presentation dates set. Please help us to achieve this goal by contacting John to let him know your date.

To reach John you can either e-mail or call him, john.c.herron@gmail.com or 651- 452-0564. This will be John’s third year heading up the campaign, so let’s get him 100% of goal, which would give the District five years running.

Fall Food Drive-Eagan Rainbow

Please plan for your unit to sign up for a block of time. For questions, contact Bob Elliott. Pack/Troop/Team/Crew Membership

The District needs every boy/girl registered by the end of December. If you have or will be getting new members in your units, please turn in the applications at the No- vember/December roundtables. Every boy/girl should be registered! Please follow-up on every boy who attended your open houses and have a second recruitment night. The District can print more fliers for you.

New Chief Black Dog OA Vigil Members

Also, ALL Boy Scout Troops have a goal of recruiting at least two boys. PLEASE plan your open house NOW! If every unit recruits more boys/girls, the District will attain Quality District which is the only criteria needed.

If you need any to help, please contact Kirk Heimstead at kheimstead@northernstarbsa.org or Kathie Schwalen at 952-431-6640 or kathieschwalen@rocketmail.com.

Fall Camporee “A Knotty Problem”

The District held another fantastic camporee in September. Everyone had a fun time and the weather was great! Tom Beck, our very own Activity Chair, worked many hours to insure that every boy had a good experience. There were many smilly faces on the boys, which was our main goal. Every activity was a hands on activity with very little talking from the leaders.

Cub Scout Pack 563 was presented the Hanover Vitalization Award for their work collect- ing 577 pounds [of food] for the local food shelf. Said Mayor Martin Waters, back row right, “Your work is really important and has made a big difference in our community.” Above are, front row left: Cub Scouts Jacob K., Noah G., Sam A., C.S. C., Andrew J., and John M., and back row, leaders Carl Roehl, Scott Johnson, and Chris Cahill.”

Hanover's unique character comes from the individuals, organizations and busi- nesses that contribute to the quality of life in our community. The City Council believes it is important to recognize and celebrate those contributions. To that end, the City Council has created the Vitalization Award program.

The Vitalization Award will endeavor to recognize projects that enrich the quality of life in Hanover, show human connections, preserve natural resources, beautify a neighborhood, improve the City's business climate, or exemplify good citizen- ship. Some examples include a business owner who improves the appearance of his/her building; a church group establishing a community garden, a business that provides a special program for our youth or a neighborhood joining together for a cleanup. The opportunities for recognition are endless. The idea is to recognize these efforts very quickly after the city has been advised of them and to publicize them to encourage other good works.

The nomination process is simple. If you’re aware of a project you think merits recognition, send us information about who should be recognized, what was done, and how their project benefited Hanover. Projects that fit the goals of the program will be recognized in our quarterly newsletter and on our website. Re- cipients will receive a certificate of appreciation from the Hanover City Council at a council meeting.
