November North Star Scout Skill Nights
The North Star District is offering Scout Skill Nights on the second Thursday of each month. Our first Scout Skill Night, in October, offered the Citizen- ship in the World merit badge (session 1) and the Citizen activity pin for Webelos. Our second Scout Skill night is planned for November 10th and will cover the Citizenship in the World (session 2) and the Fitness activity pin for Webelos. The November session will take place from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at Nativity School, 1900 Stanford Avenue, St. Paul. The Citizenship in the Community Merit badge will be offered in December (session 1) and January (session 2). The Webelos activity pin for December is Scientist and the January Webelos activity pin is Forester.
Fall Camporee The District’s Fall Camporee was done with Lake Minnetonka District and was held right in our back yard at Highland Park. This was the first time in years that St. Paul Parks and Recreation had approved camping in one of their parks. Over 300 scouts from both Districts attended and the Geology merit badge was done at Lilydale park where there actually are some great fossils to find in St. Paul. Please give Paul Kaardal a Thank You for putting this together.
Lion Cubs
North Star is having a great fall with Lion Cubs! The response from the youth has been unbelievable. Throughout the winter we will be offering District wide Grand Adventures for the new cubs and their adult partner to help ensure they have a fantastic first year of scouting here in St. Paul.

The Five to One Rule We all have a memory of a time when we were criticized. Do you remember a time when you were praised? I bet the negative comments stick in your mind.
A blog post by Bob Sutton, a management professor at Stanford University, points out that negative interactions are far more powerful than positive ones. Careful academic studies show that there must be five positive interactions for each negative one or the relationship will fail. Five to one is a lot, and that is just to break even!
How often do we do this with our Scouts? Do we notice five well-tied knots for each mistake? Do the Patrol Leaders comment on well-washed dishes and not just the dirty ones?
How about the Scouts who leave the troop, have they been told how well they are doing? If it wasn’t five to one, it should not be a surprise that the relationship with the troop failed.
So make this your Good Turn for a few days, five to one, with every one you meet, and no fake compliments. Look for true good things in every person.
District Awards
Do you have an outstanding leader? Someone who is critical for your pack, troop, team, or crew? Someone that does great things but doesn’t get great credit for their good deeds? Nominate unit leaders for District Awards of Merit or other district leader Awards!
They will be recognized at our Annual District Dinner. For more information contact Andrea at

Membership Inventories At this time please email a copy of your current roster to

2012 Klondike Derby
Get ready as Scoutmaster Jed Dotterer and Troop 582 take us all on a journey through Alaska travelling throughout the towns to experience a winter adventure. Experience some of old Alaska with log sawing events, panning for gold and of course the Klondike sled race. This years Klondike will be held at Prairie Park in Ostego. This will be one the do not miss Events of 2012 for more information or to learn how you can help contact Jed Dotterer at

JTE 2011 Remember to look at your JTE 2011 requirements! Pirates of Rum River Several ships of pirates overtook Rum River Scout Camp on September 23-25th.
Patrols built their own ships to travel around camp and participated in activities such as knot tying with their pirate hooks on, shooting the cannons, and of course a hunt for the lost treasure of Rum River. At the end Troop 610 used their pirate skills to find the key to open the treasure at the closing campfire.
Special thanks to Don Peterson, Steve Anderson, Rosalinda Sitler, Dan McDowell, Chip Caldwell, Craig Lewis, Leif Klang and Michelle Pritchard. Also a special thanks to all the patrols and troops and volunteers that helped make this event possible. Arghh!
How is
your unit doing so far? Is your unit Bronze, Silver or Gold!? For questions contact your unit commissioner or Andrea.
