November Metro Lakes Recruitment

The month of September is over and a great push for new boys was a strong one but there are still a great many boys and girls that would like to join. If your pack, troop or crew had a low turnout for your recruitment meetings, don’t give up hope. Northern Star Council is happy to work with your unit to bring new people to your program. Here are a few ideas that may help:

• Meeting Announcements in Church Bulletins • Meeting Announcements in Neighborhood publications • Invitations to join scouts given out with candy during Trick or Treating

For Troops and crews, remember it is not too late to take advantage of the Pizza Party recruitments. If your Troop or Crew has a recruitment conversation with your commissioner or with your District Executive (Chris Arndt) and enter your recruitment date into the Fall Youth Recruitment Planner, your Troop or Crew will receive a $20 Pizza Card for your recruitment event. The Pizza Event is a great event to invite friends of your kids to come and check out your troop or crew. Remember leaders, with new kids in the program there will also be new adults for leadership roles.

Uniform Exchange

Many of you are familiar with the uniform exchange program but there are a great many misunderstandings both on the professional and the volunteer side on how the program works. Uniform exchange is held on the second floor of the Golden Valley Office (5300 Glenwood Ave.) from 5:30 to 7:00 on the First and Third Mondays of each month. The uniforms run $6.00 or if you are trading in a uniform, the trade is free. Uniforms are on a first come first serve basis so be sure to come early as supplies are limited.

Please note that the uniform exchange is meant to help financially struggling families in the scouting program.

The uniform exchange program is in the process of expanding to better serve families that are not near to the council offices. An order form is in the process of being developed. The order form will to be filled out and mailed in to the Golden Valley Office to be filled to the best of our ability. The order will then be given to the District Executive overseeing that area to hand out the uniform order at your next roundtable. The order form program will be ready by the first of November.

As the supplies are limited as ask that if you have a uniform that you no longer need or know of someone with a uniform that is no longer needed, please donate it to help the families who cannot otherwise afford a uniform. Uniforms can be donated by dropping them off in the Uniform donation bin in the entrances of both Scout Service Centers.

Roster Checks Beginning late October roster checks will be performed for each pack, troop and crew. There are several functions that this process will serve. This is meant to make sure that our records of membership at the council office are as up to date as possible. These clean records will ensure a more accurate advancement record as well as guar- antee that each of the boys in your unit are covered by our scouting insurance.

If each unit can mail or email a copy of their scouting roster to Sr. District Executive Chris Arndt. You can mail your roster to 5300 Glenwood Ave. Minneapolis, Mn. 55422 or you can email to it carndt@northernstarbsa.org . Please put ROSTER CHECK in the subject line. Please have your roster sent in by the first of November.

Friends of Scouting As we begin the preparation for our 2012 year the planning processes for the upcoming Friends of Scouting Campaign have long since been in the process. With funding cuts made by the area United Way it is more important than ever to ensure the financial future of scouting.

The scouting program depends on the Friends of Scouting Campaign to cover the costs for Training Volunteers, Camping Events, Summer Camps, Base Camp, Camperships, Uniform Exchange, Juvenile Diversion, After School Programs… The list continues. With our financial support these programs cannot function.

Please show your support of your scouting program by giving a gift at your units Friends of Scouting Presentation.

If your unit has not yet scheduled your 2012 Friends of Family date, please send your date, time and location to David Engelsgaard at DEngelsgaard@interplastic. com or to Chris Arndt at carndt@northernstarbsa.org . Please have your Presenta- tion date submitted by Nov. 15th.

November Mustang

Build a Better District We had a GREAT District Camporee this fall. Special thanks to Tom Pahl and volunteers from Troop 479 as well as volunteers from around the District who pulled together to make this event a success. After all the Special Ops missions were complete, the secret messages decoded, and the events were over, we all gathered for a great campfire. At the close of this campfire, Tom challenged our Troops to consider helping to sponsor/support upcom-

ing events by “adopting” the planning process. If the mission for Scouting is to teach leadership to our young people, why not get our Scouts involved in the planning of the District’s biggest events. Is your Patrol Leaders’ Council up to the challenge of planning a District-wide event? With help and support from our District, I think ANY Troop could do this…why not yours? Contact Tom Pahl if your Troop would be willing to help to plan future District events. And thank you!!

Achievements Around the District: Special congratulations to Eagle Scout Alex Tomczak, who was recently awarded his Hornaday Badge for outstanding work in conservation. Just as Eagle Scouts must complete a service project, in order to complete the Hornaday Award a Scout must complete several projects, while also providing educational opportunities

revolving around conservation of the environment. The Hornaday Award is very rare, with only a few being award- ed in this area over the last 30 years. Additionally, we congratulate Richard Shmikler (above) and all other recent Eagle Scouts from Mustang District; a full listing of recent Eagle Scouts can be found on the back page of the Navi- gator. Great work everyone!!

Membership Growth All Units, whether Packs, Troops, or Crews, are asked to host at least one open house, joining night, bring a friend event, or other opportunity to add new fami- lies to your ranks. Ideas for events are shared each month at Roundtable, have been discussed at training, and are avail- able online at the Council website under membership resources. Make sure to promote your joining opportunity through the Unit Toolbox System (recruitment planner) at www.northernstarbsa.org/ planner Remember: Troops and Crews who attended a recruitment training or our October Roundtable AND who log on to the planner and schedule their event get a $20 voucher for pizza to serve at their open house! So act now!!

Working together to decode the secret message!

Friends of Scouting November Roundtable will feature our District Friends of Scouting Kick-off! We are asking every Unit to send one repre- sentative to hear what’s new (changes to the FOS goal-setting process that make it

easier for Units to earn incentives, among other things!) and also make your pledge to support Scouting in 2012.

also be prepared to set your presentation date…the earlier we schedule these, the better, so that your families’ support can be counted toward better Scouting!
