membership Fall Roundup Results (from front)

The best way to recruit Boy Scouts is by current Scouts inviting their friends to join. Each Scout that recruits a buddy can earn the BSA recruiter patch and for every new youth recruited – the troop gets a chance at a drawing for some troop camping equipment!

Venturing Crew Recruiting. The Venturing open house is a recruitment event where prospective new Venture Crew members enjoy a “taste” of what membership in the Crew will be like. This co-ed program has the best recruiting results when the current crew members invite their friends to join.

Whatever your Scouting unit’s recruiting needs are, the Council and District Membership Committees are here to support you with flyers, posters, applications, recruiting incentives, and “best recruiting methods”. You can find the phone number of your district’s membership chair in the district section of this issue, or you can contact the Council Membership Staff Advisor – John Overland at 763-231-7211 or joverland@northernstarbsa.org

Fall Roundup – THANK YOU!

Thank you to all the adult leaders that helped recruit over 5,000 new boys this fall! Follow-up recruitment material is avail- able; just ask your District Membership or Fall Youth Recruitment Chair. A special “Cub Scout Party” guide is available for use with Lion, Tiger and Cub Scout recruiting postcards You can have current dens that are not quite 8-10 boys invite their friends to a simple den recruitment event to gain more boys.

Thank you to all the Scouting leaders that have brought Scouting to thousands of new boys this fall! Your diligent efforts and commitment to growing the program is a great credit to your Scouting unit and the whole movement!

Peer to Peer Youth Recruiting

Have your current members ask a friend and earn a Recruiter Strip. Encourage current members to invite a friend, neighbor or classmate, who isn’t in Scouting or Venturing to attend a meeting or a Pack, Troop or Crew activity. The “Recruiter” strip is a patch that can be worn by any Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout or Venturer who has recruited another youth member. This official recognition is worn below the right uniform shirt pocket.

Once in a Lifetime Webelos Experience

October 1st dawned with crisp air but that didn’t deter nearly 3500 Webelos and their parents from descending on Stearns Scout Camp later that morning for the Northern Star Council biannual Webelos Experience. Over 400 staff members, including Boy Scouts from several troops, multiple exhibitors, and other volun- teers put on an exciting and memorable program.

The activities started at 10 AM. The Scouts were treated to a huge games area where, among other things, they jousted and played three-legged soccer. As they moved to the See and Do area, they saw Scout history demonstrations, model helicopters, huge kites, and multiple other exhibits. The Activity Badge Midway provided the opportunity to experience a taste of 19 of the 20 activity badges. Also, the Webelos Transition Midway gave Second Year Webelos a chance to find out about Boy Scouts by making fire starters and doing other activities.

After dinner, the day ended with a huge stage show featuring addresses by Council President Richard Neuner and Scout Executive John Andrews and a live band, Rich and the Resistors. The band has been a mainstay at every Webelos Experience event. The Scouts danced in a Conga line and flashed their lights to the music. After the band completed their final song, the Scouts saw a great slide show featuring pictures from throughout the day. As the slide show ended to the strains of the song “Proud To Be An American”, the Scouts experienced a fabulous fireworks display. The fireworks were so close that it felt as if you could reach up and touch them. The Scouts then camped out overnight and attended Worship Services on Sunday morning before heading for home.

Even though the day started a bit cool, the weather for the weekend was perfect and the Scouts had a great time.

A SPECIAL NOTE TO WOLVES AND BEARS: Be sure to watch for information on this event on two years – it will be your only chance to attend and you won’t want to miss it!!!

Prepare for Webelos Transition 2012

The new season for Webelos transition is in full swing. We had an excellent 2011 transition in the number of boys that transitioned from Cub Scout to Boy Scout programs. We must continue to encourage all dens to cross over all existing 2nd year Webelos into Boy Scouting.

During November and December, packs and troops should be planning cross over ceremonies, contacting adjoining packs and troops, attending the training sessions given at district roundtables on Webelos transition, and encouraging 2nd year Webelos to attend Boy Scout events.

In previous issues we have discussed the benefits of keeping boys in the program with good transition; this article is focused on delivering the promise to youth. During this time of year thousands of boys are recruited into Scouting with the promise of camping experiences, fishing, hiking, shooting sports, canoeing, etc. We keep many boys in our Cub Scouting program every year with that same prom- ise. We must use all of our resources as a movement to make sure that all boys that enter Cub Scouting are given the chance to become Boy Scouts and thus keeping our promise. The 2012 Webelos transition plan and timeline is on the web at www.northernstarbsa.org/roundup
