Winter Camp Opportunities for Scouts Boy Scouts : Snow Base and North Wind
Anyone who has ever participated in winter camping will tell you it’s not easy. And it’s often been said that nothing that’s easy is meaningful.
It’s difficult to argue that there is a more rewarding and meaningful experience in the Boy Scout program than spending a weekend winter camping. Northern Star Council offers superior winter camping programs at Tomahawk Scout Reservation (Snow Base program) and Stearns Scout Camp (North Wind program).
Scouts get the opportunity to learn how to prepare meals outdoors, build snow shelters, and stay warm. They also learn important leadership skills and teamwork that will help them develop as a leader for their troop.
Cub Scouts : Still Spots for Polar Cubs Polar Cubs is a Day Camp for Scouts from Tigers to Webelos, offered weekends this winter. With many fun outdoor activities like snow tubing, games, nature activities, and much more, Polar Cubs is the best way for Scouts and parents to spend a winter day together.
1st and 2nd year Webelos have the opportunity to sign up for Polar Webelos, which is a special Polar Cubs program just for Webelos. This program happens along side the Cub program, but in a slightly different area of camp.

Fall Recruitment Brings in Over 5,000 New Youth Members
Over 5,000 new Cubs, Scouts, Venturers, and Explorers joined a unit in Sep- tember & October! It’s never too late to build or maintain strong relationships with public, private and home schools in our quest to enroll additional youth. Great Scouting adventures are awaiting our youth – will you help to ensure they are invited to join?
It’s never too late for youth to join Scouting. Every youth that recruits another into Scouting is eligible for a free official BSA Recruiter strip to wear on their uniform, compliments of the Council Membership Committee.
Cub Scout Recruiting. The following are some ideas of how to conduct follow-up recruiting efforts:
1. Ask the current parents in your pack to help invite prospective members – you just need to ask them 2. Re-flyer schools and churches
3. If you have access to a school or sports team mailing list, send a flier about Cub Scouting to these youth
Boy Scout Recruiting. Each troop in the council is encouraged to hold an open house-type recruiting event for boys that never had the opportunity to join Scouts before. The council fall Boy Scout recruitment plan was distributed through August & September Roundtables.

Serve Scouting and Your Community as a Unit Commissioner
Unit commissioners fulfill a vital role in providing continuity and support to help Scouting units be successful. They serve as a friend and trusted advisor, assisting in program planning, accessing re- sources from other district and Council committees (such as train- ing and advancement) as well as helping secure leadership in times of transition. Our council is mak- ing a major push to recruit and train at least one unit Commission- er for every three Scouting units.
You can help. Experienced Scouting volunteers who are transitioning from roles working directly with youth or unit administrative positions make excellent Commissioners and always find this a fulfilling way to stay involved in Scouting. Another great source is Scouting alumni. If you are interested in joining the ranks of our unit commissioners or know someone you would recommend, please contact your district commissioner listed on your district’s page of this newsletter.
