Den Chief Training We had a successful round of Den Chief Training at Northwest Camporee, creating some new, well-trained Den Chiefs in our District. For those of you were not able to make it—don’t panic! There is another opportunity to get trained on November 12, at the Webelos Activity Day. For more information, please contact Northwest Training Chair Dina Boie, at dinaboie@
hotmail.com
The Den Chief is an important piece of the Pack-Troop relationship, and it is a great leadership role for a Boy Scout. Take advantage of this great opportunity and get a trained Den Chief in your Pack!
Northwest Camporee Thank you to Troops 106 and 93 for hosting and co-hosting the Camporee, respectively. Every Troop and Pack who attended had a great time, participating in a variety of unique interpretations of what classic video games would be like in real life. Some of these exciting activities included real-life versions of Paper Boy, Donkey Kong, Mario Party, and Pong (among many others)
The only disappointment was that there was no Oregon Trail – but we all have to understand the dangers that would have been involved in fording the river.
Mark your Calendars now for the 2012 Camporee: October 5-7, 2012.

November Polaris Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ: My first grader has special needs. Is there a special pack for young boys with special needs?
Answer: Your son is at a perfect age to join a regular den and pack with kids his own age in his own neighborhood. He will be with typical boys who will accept him unconditionally.
As they grow together they will really start to watch out for him and take care of him.
As a parent of a Scout with special needs I can not even begin to describe the joy of watching the young Scouts form around the Scout with special needs. And watching your son learn from other boys his age is a great joy.
Polaris’ September Fishing Clinic Success
On September 10, 2011 the Polaris district held the fourth annual fishing clinic for people with special needs. It was a huge success. Thanks to the efforts of many volunteers and sponsors 46 participants had the chance to learn new skills, polish old ones and even catch some fish. Thanks to Scout Master Bucky, participants were able to work on their Disabilities Awareness and Fishing Merit Badges. Pictures and videos of the event are posted on
http://polaris.nsbsa.org
The generosity of several sponsors is greatly appreciated. Vados Bait and Tackle provided bait and volunteers. LeMire Sales provided food and volunteers for staff and participants. MinnAqua has been a partner from the start, and continues to support the education of people in the sport of fishing. Hallberg Marine supplied a pontoon to get everyone out on the lake fishing. Troop 509 from ThreeRivers District came out and enthusiastically supported the event. A special thanks to all the sponsors and volunteers for making this another great event.
Polaris Fundraiser with “Heavy Appetizers”
The Polaris Fundraiser is back this January, to be at the Fort Snelling Officer’s Club on January 20, 2012.
We are talking to vendors who offer many tantalizing refreshments for our guests, and we seek Silent Auction lots to support the Council’s special needs activities.

Every Scout knows to be prepared and do a good turn daily. One of our own got this opportunity in a major way in May of 2010, when he saved his mother’s life.

Nov/Dec 2011
Jake Torkelson, Eagle Scout in Troop 408, rescued his mother at a Mounds View Speech Team banquet when she began choking on a piece of roast beef. His mother tried to excuse herself from the room when she was choking, but Jake realized it was more serious and followed her out of the room. He discovered her to be in desperate need of help, and he performed the Heimlich maneuver until the piece of roast beef stuck in her throat became dislodged.
What Jake did not know was that his family and Troop nominated him for a National Award after this occurred.
Jake and his twin brother, Josh, received their Eagle Awards together on October 16, 2011. At the end of the ceremony, Jake was presented with the Medal of Merit—an award given to him by the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America. The award is given to youth members and adults who have performed outstanding acts of service of a rare or exceptional character, reflecting an uncommon degree of concern for others.
Only 75 people throughout the country receive this award every year. Jake is among the many heroes we have in Northwest District, serving as a fantastic role model for all other Scouts.
He was surprised and flattered to receive the award—but above all, he remained the modest, humble Scout who never believed he deserved any special recognition in the first place.
