MSc Leather Technology (Professional) Who is it for?


You are a graduate from a scientific background who wishes to extend your expertise to include leather technology. The course will develop the skills and flexibility necessary to discriminate between technical and entrepreneurial issues related to the successful management of commercial operations within the leather industry.


About the Course


As one of the foremost centres for leather education in the world, The Institute for Creative Leather Technologies (ICLT) is dedicated to providing cutting-edge leather education in the theory and practice of leather technology. You will study within an environment that encourages the development of intellectual creativity as well as ability in researching other advanced technologies and relating these to the needs of the leather industry.


You will be encouraged to develop your interest in leather technology and choose a learning path that most closely fits your requirements. The course focuses on the science and technology of leather manufacture. Graduates can expect to enter research and development positions in chemical companies and tanneries or progress to academic careers.


Compulsory Modules


Leather Science This module establishes the scientific technology involved in leather manufacturing. It is an advanced study of the important physical, chemical and biochemical processes and mechanisms, and an exploration of their effects on the variable parameters influencing the outcomes.


Leather Process Operations


In any manufacturing process, problems arise from a wide range of causes. Many of these are straightforward, being related to well-known phenomena in manufacturing, raw material and process. However, it is also true that every process is subjected, either intermittently or regularly to more complex problems for which the day-to-day strategies and tactics of manufacturing management are less effective, or not effective. This module provides a critical insight into leather manufacturing and the production of a leather that is both ‘safe and legal’ and ‘fit for purpose’.


Quality Evaluation and Systematic Problem Solving


A pre-requisite for an award at Master’s level in any technology must be a grasp of the business skills particular to the field of technology and the problems associated with the quality of leather. The modern business environment is complex, and technological issues are, inevitably, intertwined with commercial issues. This module will allow you to place the particular issues of leather technology and quality evaluation into the business context.


Performance Leather Process Operations


The conversion of skin and hide into leather, followed by finishing processes (which convert the raw product into a base material for other products) is essentially a practical, manufacturing process supported by technical knowledge. If strategic technical decisions regarding this process are to be successful, they must be supported by experience of the practice of leather manufacture. This module provides the opportunity for you to practice and critically review the practical aspects of advanced leather manufacture in the production of technical leathers.


Optional Modules


Podiatry: Applied to the Footwear Industry


In terms of human gait, problems impacting on foot health arise from a wide range of causes. These include congenital, developmental, functional, traumatic injury and systemic disease. In addition research indicates approximately a third of foot/ lower limb problems are potentially attributable to footwear. Management of these pathologies can be mitigated by footwear that is fit for purpose in terms of design and construction materials. In a global population with increased incidence of diabetes, vascular disease, HIV and obesity there are complex systemic problems for which application of this knowledge to the footwear industry may significantly contribute to foot health management. This module provides a critical insight into the application of such podiatric principles in considering approaches to footwear design and marketing.


Sustainable Manufacturing


This module is intended to provide an introduction to how sustainability and sustainable development affect the way in which engineering must be practised in the future. It will address the need to live within constraints and to ensure more fairness in access to limited resources, which lies at the heart of the concepts of sustainability and sustainable development.
