Te UK’s No.1 University for

Social Enterprise.* *Ashoka U, February 2013.

What social enterprise means for our students

At the University of Northampton, students are able to develop as a social entrepreneur, combining learning with earning, working in an existing social enterprise, often as one of the directors and co-owners of a co-operative, or setting up their own venture.

You’ll be able to develop new skills that will benefit both your studies and your employability after graduation. In addition, many students will be able to earn money through work in social enterprises, potentially enabling students to reduce the costs of their investment in their education.

Coco Careers – a joint venture between the University and a local business. Coco Careers’ primary focus is to improve undergraduate and graduate employability while delivering commercially aware, productive and industry-ready candidates into graduate-level jobs.

Tap the Table – set up by our graduates, this social enterprise takes theatre workshops into the community. One of the main aims of this business is to provide a diverse range of theatre to communities that have limited access to the arts.

Bag in Bag – students manage this business as shareholding directors, creating case study information relevant to their enterprise assignments and earning an income whilst they are at university.

Be a Northampton SILK Awardee (Social Innovation in Learning and Knowhow) Social Enterprise University Award

This is a unique opportunity to stand out from the crowd – the only programme like it in the UK. You have the opportunity to work at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels, each being worth 200 hours of activity. You start whenever you like and submit your portfolio just before you graduate. Recent experiences before you signed up to University also count.

The SILK award’s focus is on understanding and solving problems. The programme allows you to take a good idea from an assignment and develop it into a successful invention or service. This award will demonstrate your skills at problem solving, creativity and knowledge of starting a new venture – either an event or a business. You will be mentored by other students, with support and finance from University experts.

You will be able to network with other students across the world through our Dialogue Café conferencing system. You will have the opportunity to go on eight-week summer adventures in Kenya and other countries. As a graduate of the programme, you will be able to join a professional body to internationally recognise your experience. You will have the opportunity to plan and pilot a new product or business idea with the support of the University finance and design experts, ready to launch your new venture when you graduate.
