Te School of Social Sciences


The School of Social Sciences offers a variety of postgraduate degree programmes as taught and research awards. We offer PhD supervision across our academic subjects and are home to the largest number of PhD students in the University.


The School provides a dynamic, multidisciplinary learning, development and research environment comprising several areas of applied expertise including:

The School holds a reputation for high quality, flexibly delivered programmes and international recognition for our research activities. Our research directly informs the design and teaching of our programmes. We are home to several research centres, where our academics are actively engaged.


The Northampton Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) focuses its work on housing and regeneration, to provide sustainable communities. Additionally, the Collaborative Centre for the Built Environment (CCBE) focuses on the built environment, connecting expertise in sustainability, sustainable construction, urban design and smart cities.


Internationally-recognised and the largest academically based research group of its kind, the Centre for the Study of Anomalous Psychological Processes (CSAPP) focuses on the study of parapsychological and transpersonal experiences and phenomena. Our Social and Cultural Research in Psychology Group (SCRIP) focuses on a broad range of issues from mental health and family life to education, human geographies, gender, ethnicity and class.


We have a strong History division with research active and publishing academics exploring topics including elites and country houses, military intelligence and policing in North Africa. The Radicalism and New Media Research Group within the History division has developed a notable specialism in the politics of the contemporary far right, both in Britain and across the world. The group works in collaboration with academics and professionals in a wide range of institutions.


The Centre for Children and Youth (CCY) holds a strong international reputation for its research about children and young people’s needs and experiences in diverse contexts. Researchers have been awarded major research grants from bodies including the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), Engineering and Physical Sciences and Research Council (EPSRC), Pears Foundation/ Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, and the European Social Fund (ESF).
