Te School of Te Arts

The School of The Arts has a rich history that dates back over 120 years, and it continues to produce outstanding graduates. Students are given a platform to develop their creative skills within a vibrant and stimulating environment, and are encouraged to be experimental and original.

The School is at the cutting-edge of creativity and critical thinking and provides a dynamic, inspiring environment in which to study. The School offers exciting and innovative postgraduate courses as well as opportunities to qualify at Doctoral level through both written and practice-led submissions. The School supports a large community of PhD students and coordinates a wide variety of seminars, exhibitions and conferences.

Each of our Master’s courses provides the opportunity for students to challenge their understanding of their chosen discipline at an advanced level and to be part of a community which values cross-subject inter-relationships and critical dialogues. Our students study in excellent resources and are encouraged to have links with industry and the professional art/ design sectors. All our courses are underpinned by an international standard of staff research and exceptional relations within professional environments.

The School provides a wealth of facilities including a cinema, digital imaging labs, music recording studios, a purpose-built dance studio, performance spaces, photographic darkrooms, fashion and textile workshops and printmaking studios.

The School is comprised of five areas of study: • Design

• Fashion and Textiles • Fine Art

• Media, English and Culture • Performance

The School of The Arts also supports a wide range of research activities, where we encourage our staff to become leaders in national and international research, making significant contributions through publications and practice-led work; such as exhibitions, performances and designs.

The School maintains two major research centres, including The Research Centre for Contemporary Fiction and Narrative, and the Centre for Practice-led Research in The Arts. Other research groups include: Psyche in The Arts; Choreographic Lab; the Design Research Group; Landscape and The Arts.

Whichever career direction our students choose, and at whatever level they choose to study, we are proud to say that the School of The Arts offers a caring, stimulating and challenging academic environment. We aim to identify and develop the individual talent within each student and strive to bring out the best of what they can achieve in the world of the arts and academia in the UK and beyond.
