MSc Environmental Informatics Who is it for?

You are a graduate in a related area seeking to broaden your skills and understanding of environmental analysis, strategy and planning.

Media Techniques About the Course

The programme has been designed to provide an integrated postgraduate programme of informatics study combined with specialisation in environmental management. The need for qualified graduates who can collate, compile, analyse, interpret and present data will continue to increase as the capabilities of computer hardware and software and the demand for information continues to grow. As the economic and social advantages of environmentally-friendly technologies become ever more apparent, people with skills and expertise in environmental informatics will be well-placed to drive and implement the necessary changes. The programme will be delivered by a range of teaching methods and academic understanding will be complemented with hands-on experience in both computational and environmental aspects.

Computers now make use of a wide variety of digital media such as sound, images and graphics.

This module assesses the technology behind this media, associated problems and how media is manipulated within a computer system.

Java Programming

This module will provide you with an awareness of programming using a commercially available portable language. You will learn the skills needed to analyse, design, implement, test and maintain a software development project.

Informatics Research Thesis

The research thesis will provide you with the opportunity to learn appropriate research techniques in order to be able to undertake independent, relevant and in-depth research in a relevant topic of your choice within your chosen informatics specialisation.

Optional Modules Course Content

The course comprises four core modules, two optional modules and the research thesis.

Core Modules

Mathematics of Data This module covers essential mathematics for informatics and data analysis. It builds a sound basis for development of your problem-solving and analytical skills, accompanied with core knowledge and insight into abstraction, generalisation and logical thinking.


Databases represent a vital resource in the vast majority of internet-based systems. Concentrating on the most common form of database, namely relational databases, this module emphasises the importance of sound design and data management within systems.

Water Resource Management You will examine the effectiveness of water resource management strategies from around the world in urban and rural environments, allowing you to understand the problems associated with water resources, and what the appropriate response could be.

Energy Resource Management

This module will provide you with the opportunity to review and assess the manner in which energy resources are exploited, the efficiencies and environmental impacts of energy utilisation, aspects of economics and energy policy, future energy strategies and sustainability.

Land Contamination and Disposal

The use of landfill sites is a major waste disposal route around the world. This module will provide you with a broad view of issues relating to contaminated land, in particular, the scientific principles underlying current methodologies for the remediation of contaminated land and the effectiveness of such strategies.

Sustainable Urban Environments

This module focuses on the challenge of sustainability within an urban environment in terms of social, economic and environmental issues within the built environment. This module will deliver current thinking in urban sustainability and introduce theory, concepts and examples of both contemporary problems and proposed solutions.

Climate Change and Risk Management

This module examines the management of key selected factors associated with influencing climatic and other physical environmental conditions.

Geo-informatics for Environmental Management

This module will enable you to explore the concepts of GIS, remote sensing, mapping technology and evaluate their applications. The potential for spatial information, remote sensing and Global Positioning Systems to improve policy for societal decision-makers will be discussed in detail.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of this course can expect to be highly sought after and able to secure posts in the public and private sectors, national and local government bodies, water and waste industries, consultancy and research and higher education.

Duration of Course

The course commences in September of each year and runs for 12 months. You will attend lectures, seminars and workshops throughout two taught semesters followed by a period of supported independent study whilst you complete your dissertation.

Entry Requirements

You will normally hold a recognised First or Second Class Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject. You will be expected to have a working knowledge of computers and networks and it is essential that you have practical hands-on experience of at least one programming language. Students for whom English is not their first language will be required to demonstrate that they meet the minimum English language requirement of IELTS 6.5 (or equivalent).
