MA Special Educational Needs and Inclusion Who is it for?

You are a graduate in a related subject area or have professional experience and wish to develop your knowledge and understanding of issues relating to Special Educational Needs and Inclusion.

About the Course

During your time at the University you will have an opportunity to study several aspects of education, to visit schools and engage with a wide range of teachers and researchers.

The School of Education at the University of Northampton is nationally and internationally recognised for its work in SEN and Inclusion. All those who teach on the programme belong to the flagship Centre for Education and Research and have their work regularly published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at national and international conferences. This expertise provides the ideal environment for those with an interest in SEN to undertake further study and we look forward to working closely with you.

In recent years we have welcomed students from many countries including India, China, Pakistan, Philippines, Greece, Israel, Gambia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Cameroon. This rich mix of cultures and languages enables us all to learn from each other and to share a wide range of experiences and expertise. We hope that you will enjoy making new friends and building networks for the future.

Each year some of our international students progress from studying for the MA to joining our PhD programme. You will meet some of these colleagues during your time studying with us. The School of Education has a vibrant research culture and we anticipate that you will enjoy participating in the work of educational researchers and sharing your ideas with them.

Whilst each country has unique features within its education system there are also many global issues which challenge our schools and the children within them. We therefore see this course as providing an interesting exchange of ideas and providing a structure through which we can all learn together.

Course Content

In order to achieve the MA in SEN and Inclusion you are required to undertake a series of assessed modules supported by a range of other non-assessed activities. These are designed to enable you to gain mastery of your subject and to become a part of the research and scholarly community within the School of Education.

In addition, study support groups will provide an opportunity for you to be given structured advice about your assignments and practical help with organising your work, conducting literature searches and managing your reading. They will additionally afford you an opportunity to work in teams with other students on the course and with the support of experienced researchers.

You will undertake a placement one day a week in a local school. This will provide you with an opportunity to get to know a school and its staff and to work alongside an experienced teacher. These visits are designed to enable you to contextualise the work which you will be doing in taught sessions and through personal study. Following each visit you will discuss your observations and have an opportunity to reflect upon what you have gained from the visits.

Semester one: Induction and Academic Support

Postgraduate Academic Skills

Introduction to the English Education and Special Education System Promoting Inclusive Practice Research Methods

Semester two:

Key Concepts in Inclusion and Diversity in Teaching and Learning

Additional SEN and Inclusion modules Commence dissertation

Semester three: Completion of dissertation.

Assessment The course assessment involves essays, portfolios, presentations and small scale research projects. You will complete your final dissertation on a topic negotiated with a tutor.

Career Opportunities

Our former students have used the expertise developed on the course to assist them in seeking more senior posts within education. Some use the MA as a stepping stone to progress to PhD study and see this as a helpful route into an academic career.

Duration of Course

The programme is structured over a period of one year and therefore modules are spaced over three semesters.

Entry Requirements

You will normally hold a recognised First or Second Class Bachelor’s degree in a relevant area. Applicants with other qualifications, in particular those with recent professional experience will be considered on an individual basis. Applicants for whom English is not their first language will need to demonstrate that they meet the minimum English Language requirements of IELTS 6.5 (or equivalent).
