OSCAR DE LA RENTA’S FIRST STORE IN LONDON’S MAYFAIR FITTED OUT BY PORTVIEW

Portview has completed a fit out for designer clothing brand Oscar de la Renta in Mayfair, London. The 300 square metre store, designed by Meyer Davis in New York, which opened its doors on the 18th January, is the designer’s first standalone store in London, on the corner of Mayfair’s famous Mount Street and Berkeley Square.

In just 28 weeks, the fit out was completed and involved stripping back the building to its original shell then putting the project together almost entirely from start to finish. Portview recommended the client worked with architects, rpa:vision, and M&E contractors, Foreman Roberts. They managed everything from strengthening the building’s structure and refurbishing the staircase to the lighting, utilities and telephones.

The store’s furniture was designed in New York, but had never been made before; and so once the manufacturing drawings had been completed it had to be manufactured in its entirety and installed by Portview.

flagship store opened on Omotesando, a prominent retail corridor in Tokyo. The flagship design features a façade of 210 stacked, translucent display boxes in a herringbone pattern of vertical and horizontal orientation that accommodate the brand’s wide repertoire of products. In addition to the façade, OMA designed a “floating” tower of 105 illuminated acrylic units that encase the store’s central stair, drawing pedestrians to the upper level. Consolidating the display on the facade and circulation creates a condition in which the shopper is continuously surrounded by Coach’s products, while simultaneously liberating floor space.

Following a kiosk designed for Macy’s in New York and the office’s first built work in Tokyo, this is OMA’s second collaboration with Coach.

MRA APPOINTED TO DESIGN HOUSE OF HACKNEY’S FIRST STORE IN SHOREDITCH

The two‐storey store will showcase House of Hackney’s full product range, from clothing to home furnishings.

Speaking about the project, MRA Director Stephanie Srivastava, explains: “The interior will feature elements that will reflect both the bold, non‐conformist spirit of House of Hackney, together with its roots in traditional, high quality craftsmanship.” MRA’s recent projects, particularly the successful design of Agent Provocateur’s store on Madison Avenue, New York, were major factors in House of Hackney’s decision to award the project. Frieda Gormley, House of Hackney said: “MRA’s experience shows they possess the design skills and vision to create the inspirational space we envisage for House of Hackney.”

The store will open in May 2013. 10 www.a1retailmagazine.com
