Over the years I have stayed at many Spa and Golf Hotels with a regular group of friends. We usually book a package deal through golfbreaks.com, a website that offers excellent value options providing golf or spa treatments, meals and overnight stays. It’s always hard to find a happy medium;


often either the Spa and leisure facilities for our partners are poor or these are great but the golf course is not up to scratch. However, we had no such complaints with our first visit to Donnington Valley. The award winning 4* hotel is located


within the grounds of the golf course, which sits within the majestic hills of the Berkshire countryside. The golf course is nice and challenging with its tight tree­ lined fairways and fast greens, and a visit to the grade 2 listed clubhouse is a great way to finish your round. The hotel has a relaxed atmosphere;


with a number of seating areas over two floors where you can chill out and enjoy an afternoon drink from the well­stocked bars. Our room was clean and spacious and provided us with a wonderful view over the parkland golf course. The Spa facilities were excellent, with


seven private rooms that offered a host of treatments to pamper and relax. The gym was modern and very well equipped, including an 18 metre swimming pool, jacuzzi, steam, sauna and aromatherapy rooms. Glass doors open to an outdoor

found the staff to be informative, courteous and extremely helpful. The hotel is within easy reach of


Newbury racecourse and town centre, or you may prefer to visit Highclere Castle, with its beautiful gardens designed by Capability Brown. The Castle’s latest claim to fame is its use as the location for TV series Downton Abbey. We found our stay excellent value and we’re already planning a return trip later this year.
