Retail Goes POPAI!


How did the POPAI Awards first come about? The POPAI Awards were launched as a direct response to call from the industry. The British P­O­P Awards had been running independent of POPAI for a number of years. However, entrants were required to ship displays down to London to be judged, often requiring huge investment to produce one­off units. Whilst this model worked for other industries, it was not appropriate for the P­O­P industry. The POPAI Awards were launched in 2007, and the number of entries received has grown year­on­year – from 135 entries in 2008 to 218 in 2012 – and now form an integral part of POPAI UK & Ireland’s commitment to recognising best practice within our industry.


We talk to the organisers of The POPAI Awards to learn a little about their history before the big event this month.


Why is it important for the industry to recognise success through awards? The Awards have established themselves as a pinnacle of achievement across all P­O­P disciplines, from creative agencies and manufacturers to installation and new media specialists. This is a great chance for suppliers and clients to have independent validation for their hard work – with Awards entries presided over by 19 expert retail marketing practitioners, and there are few people better placed to pass judgement on what good looks like.
