penreach has pledged to continue investing in
its copper infrastructure, but it was never designed to transmit the big chunks of data required for all the things that people want to do online today. “An all-fibre infrastructure is a very different story,” commented Chalfen. “To meet the needs of large and medium sized businesses, data centres, mobile operators and other organisations, including government and schools, we offer a range of fibre based Ethernet products. The dedicated national Ethernet network over which they operate can transport vast amounts of information around the
country in an ultra-fast, assured and highly cost effective manner. What’s more, we have targeted huge price reductions across our portfolio in the last year to make our services more accessible to the needs of small to medium sized businesses.”
These days Ethernet is making expensive and difficult to maintain private circuits redundant and replacing them with something far better, at this much reduced wholesale cost, observes Chalfen. “Quite simply, it is providing the future platform for a host of innovative services and applications, including content distribution,” she said. “Ethernet can deliver any application a business

That business can be sure that everyone’s working from the same version of software and provide their staff with access both from home and when they’re out-and-about. It’s not just the public sector and large businesses that are benefiting from fibre based products. “Our commitment to bring Super- fast Fibre Access within reach of two thirds of UK homes by 2015 is set to offer the benefits to consumers
and small businesses too,” added Chalfen. “No one else has had the vision to invest £2.5 billion to deploy a fibre infrastructure on such a grand scale. We’re already well on the way though and on track to pass 4 million homes by Christmas 2010. We’re also eager to work in partnership with government to make Super- fast Fibre Access available to the remaining third of UK homes that aren’t on our 2015 ‘to do’ list. We believe that the scale of our current fibre deployment makes Openreach a natural choice in this respect.”

Openreach is to add value where and when it matters. “We’re working hard to provide a next generation infrastructure that our customers can build a future on,” said Chalfen. “And when it comes to helping them win business with it, we have a range of supporting services and solutions that can be called upon.
