ne of the most fundamental tricks in a snowboarder’s repertoire – and one taught early on – is the ground- to-air move known as an ollie. We teach it for many
reasons: to add more fun to any run, get ready for jumps, launch
onto a rail or box, and clear any last-minute obstacles. T is article gives tips for getting extra power out of the pop of the essential ollie. A common way to teach an ollie is to
fi rst have the student pressure the tail of their snowboard while fl exing their back leg and keeping the front leg straighter. T en they’re encouraged to quickly extend the rear leg to fl ex the tail while lifting the nose off the ground. Once they reach full extension in the back leg, the energy stored in the board will release, propelling the rider

into the air and creating the main part of the ollie maneuver. T ese teaching tactics will produce an ollie, but does the rider get the most possible power out of it? In a word, no. By fi rst applying a movement to the nose of the snowboard, then moving to the tail to initiate the ollie, riders can get more power and pop out of their ollies. Here’s how.
