space saving energy chain systems for the power supplies for both long and cross travel movements. Typical customized products that have been supplied

include a hydraulic semi-portal crane, with a lift capacity of 80 tons for use on a drilling rig. Tis incorporated twin monorail hoists, together with four JDN hydraulic drives for the crane travel movements.

Te J D Neuhaus cranes are insensitive to dust, humidity and aggressive atmospheres as standard, operating within a temperature range of -20C to 70C. Tey provide 100% duty ratings with no downtime and only minimum maintenance requirements. Overload protection and fail-safe braking are incorporated, together with emergency-stop safety features. Special limit switch arrangements for end-travel, anti- collision and protected zone status are also incorporated as required. 

KUKA Brings Speed to the Casting Line

KUKA Industries and process specialists from Reis have

developed casting lines to meet the demand for lightweight cylinder heads. Starting from standardized automation com- ponents, these lines are precisely adapted and matched to customer needs. Te basic system is designed for a produc- tion throughput of more than 60 cylinder heads per hour. It consists of three double casting machines and downstream follow-on processing. An optimal solution for decoupling the casting process and the unloading of parts is found in the use of KUKA Foundry robots and Reis linear technology. Te core set- ting robot is installed as a second kinematic system on the longitudinal travel of the unloading robot. Te use of axis 1 as a common axis provides the customer with both cost and production advantages. Te permanent mold is filled by a foundry variant KUKA robot, which moves on a floor- mounted linear unit between the furnace and the permanent mold casting machine in the rear area of the system. A spe- cial pouring ladle drive, combined with the casting process functions in the robot controller, ensures easy operator access in the event of parameter changes. Following the automated unloading of parts from the permanent mold, these parts are cooled and then immediately marked to ensure traceability. After fettling, the risers and sprue are separated in a sawing process. Tus prepared, the castings proceed to fine fettling and are available for automatic stacking in lattice boxes. Use of the Reis linear kinematic system for setting the

cores and unloading the castings enables the traversing units to be installed at the same overhead level. Tis provides optimal access to the double casting machines. Te tools and permanent molds can be exchanged easily using a gantry crane. Te system offers reliable production and creates high-

quality castings.  Visit www.kuka-industries.com for more information.
