. . . a slightly off-kilter view of local life and worldly matters

S

o farewell radio’s Sunday chart show. Like shops closing on the Sabbath and roast lunches you are no longer an integral part of the last day of the week. How I remember tuning in when the top 20 really was worth listening to - in the days of ground-breaking acts like Kate Bush, Roxy Music, David Bowie and Queen coming from nowhere to compete against silly novelty songs or the family friendly tunes of Abba, Brotherhood of Man, The Three Degrees and Mud.

Apparently the chart show will now reside somewhere on Radio One’s Friday schedule.

Where was the Cambridgeshire singer Sam Smith a

year or two ago? A real talent but off most people’s radar that’s for sure. Now the multi- Grammy award winning star is playing a special ‘return home’ forest concert near Thetford this summer and getting tickets has proved harder than finding hen’s teeth. I tried. The event was sold out inside an hour or two and no, I don’t have any press tickets either.

Anyone for Confit of Squirrel? It’s on the menu at the Elveden Inn and the meat seems to be selling well in the nearby Estate shop. Should it contain the warning ‘may contain nuts.’?

Who says the royals are a cosseted lot, shunning any low profile events that bring them close to the general public? Olympic silver medallist Zara Phillips was at last month’s horse trials at Isleham walking the course with her dogs before competing. Did the attending crowds bother her? Not in the least. And she seemed perfectly happy with her ignominity.

“Carrs of Bury St Edmunds are delighted to have advertised BMW in the Bury and West Suffolk magazine since it’s launch in May and have also

taken full page adverts for MINI inside too. The high quality editorial and production of this magazine makes it an ideal place for Carrs to advertise.”

Back in the depths of winter we spoke to ex-England international cricketer Nick Knight, (pictured) who lives near Bury St Edmunds, about his country’s chances in the World Cup. Despite his misgivings on how English cricket approaches the limited overs format he thought they should get out of the group stages and into the quarter finals. Sadly not even that good Nick.

The timing couldn’t have been much better. I was listening to a news item on the car radio about the search for Britain’s national bird when one of our feathered friends kindly deposited something distinctly unpleasant on my windscreen. Let’s just say I won’t be voting for pigeons.

Traffic information cutting into the radio station you are listening to can be useful, but not always. I was driving along the other day listening to a favourite track on a CD when BBC Radio Suffolk traffic news interrupted to say:“ nothing to report on the roads this morning.”
