EXECUTIVE HIRE SHOW REVIEW
The new access platforms made their first public appearance at the Show.
JCB world premiere
The manufacturer chose the Show for the public launch of its first access platforms, together with other new hire industry products. Nick Johnson reports.
A big draw to this year’s Show was the first exhibition appearance of two of JCB’s new electric scissor lifts, heralding the company’s surprise move into powered access in a big way. Initially, there are nine electric scissors and, by the end of this year, there will be no less than 27 machines in the new JCB Access range, including three rough terrain diesel scissors, five articulating booms and ten telescopic booms.
JCB contends that customers will appreciate an alternative supplier in the powered access market. It considers that the backup offered by its comprehensive dealer network, together with the ability to supply platforms with its LiveLink telematics system and the provision of funding through JCB Finance, will help it get firmly established. It also believes the move will help it become more of a ‘one stop shop’ for those hirers it already supplies, as well as attracting new customers.
Having developed its new machines in secret over the last two years, the company is emphatic that it is very serious about grabbing
The machines are powered by four 6V or 12V batteries and have hydraulic drive. For added rigidity, the bottom pin on all models is mounted directly into the chassis, while the sliding pin is supported by wear pads - technology shared with the manufacturer’s Loadall products. The scissor pack has been designed using full pivot bosses, another technology transfer from other JCB machines. The platform controller cradle can be positioned anywhere on the guardrail. It can also be placed on the side of the platform frame to allow ground level operation.
The scissor lifts comply with the latest ANSI and CSA legislation and have been independently certified by the well- respected TUV notified body. All nine machines have JCB’s LiveLink telematics system, which monitors them remotely to record utilisation and performance data.

a significant slice of the 130,000-units-a-year global powered access platform market. Phil Graysmark, formerly with Genie, is Sales Director of the new company JCB Access Ltd. To get a cost- effective, comprehensive range introduced quickly, the machines are being made in China, in a dedicated production area.
Nine new scissor lifts
The electric scissors exhibited at the Show were the S1930E and S2032E, machines with maximum working heights of 7.8m and 8.3m respectively. They weigh 1,526kg and 1,835kg, with platform capacities of 230kg and 380kg. Overall, the nine new scissors lifts weigh between 1,330kg and 3,366kg and provide working heights from 6.6m to 15.8m. The two smallest, the S1530E and S1930E, have platforms measuring 1.64m long by 0.76m wide, while the bigger models use a 2.5m long platform, apart from the largest S4550E model which has a 2.64m long working area. Platform capacities range from 227kg to 550kg.

The four articulated booms to be introduced later this year will have maximum working heights from 16.9m to 26.6m. Complete with JCB diesel engines, four-wheel drive and two wheel steer, they can
achieve up to 40% gradeability and provide a maximum stowed driving speed of up to 7.0km/h.
The third quarter of 2017 will see the arrival of a 15.7m maximum working height AJ45E electric powered articulating boom model, and the forthcoming range of ten diesel telescopic booms will offer maximum working heights 22.6m to 43.6m.
Another significant introduction is the much-changed 403 compact articulated wheel loader. This 2.59-tonne machine, with a standard bucket capacity of 0.4m3
, now has a 26.0kW Kubota engine instead of
the Kohler used before. The newcomer also utilises Bosch Rexroth hydraulic pumps and ZF axles. Rather than the individual wheel motors used previously, the new 403 has a two-speed hydrostatic transmission with an inching capability operated by the brake pedal. Standard top speed is 20km/h but 30km/h is available as an option. Customers can also select open or manual diff locks front and rear.
