EXECUTIVE HIRE SHOW REVIEW continued

We don’t often place orders at exhibitions, but we made an exception here by buying a fleet of RPX 35 reversible plate compactors that Altrad Belle launched at the Show, to the value of £50,000. It has several innovative characteristics including electric start, conveniently located transport wheels, good access for maintenance, and the HAV levels are the lowest we have seen for a machine in this category. Hire Station actually gave feedback during the development of this model, and listening to the views of the fitters who maintain the equipment ensures good design.

This annual event is a must for the serious hirer, giving us the opportunity to see all the major suppliers under one roof. This year in particular there were a number of new companies and products that were certainly of interest. It is good to see so many exhibitors coming back year after year, which underlines the importance of the event. We had agreed to meet with some of our key suppliers to discuss our planned branch opening in the south west of England. As always, meeting up with so many suppliers and hirers that we have either worked with or purchased from over the years, in an informal setting is advantageous and renews friendships. The evening Party was a milestone, with Robert Aplin bowing out after so many years supporting the hire industry so passionately.

We were

particularly interested in the Kubota KX027-4 that was

unveiled at the Show, as it has some great design touches. We also wanted to see the

KX080-4 model in the flesh and we have placed a provisional order with Ian Whiting of Chepstow

Equipment for two machines. Other items we looked at included the Slanetrac HT1000 tracked carrier and we are planning to add two to our fleet in the spring. We spent time with BPH Attachments, looking at a potential order for

Prodem hydraulic breakers and we purchased a lone worker tracking unit from Cantrack. Also, we had a good discussion with Syrinx/Point of Rental. We are keen to use the latest updates that are coming out, including the new apps. Finally we met David Smith on the CPA stand to thank him for his help with a query regarding a previous hire.

In my role as Commercial Manager, I need to see suppliers face-to-face and find out more about innovations and new products that could add real value to our hire fleet. To be able to do all this in just two days is a great use of my time. This year, I was very interested in the latest electric- start reversible compactor plate from Altrad Belle and the new additions to the Nightsearcher range of

LED lighting. The Show itself is lively and, on a

personal note, I enjoy catching up with old friends and colleagues, and finding out what they’re up to.

The Show enables us to engage with our current suppliers about deals for our next financial year, which starts on 1 April. Customer enquiries for the next 12 months indicate that ground-working equipment will be in high demand, with house building construction of large industrial units being busy in our regions. We placed orders with Doosan for twelve 7/41 148cfm compressors, and with Seddons for fifteen 5x3 Winget mixers. We have orders booked with Advanced-KFS for eight Plant & Go vehicles, as well as for their new dropside pickup. It was great to talk to other suppliers and hirers, who all seemed very positive for the year ahead.
