AIR CONDITIONING
Air con: what to look for
Andrew Faulkner, commercial manager of air conditioning at Samsung details the key questions and considerations that customers and installers should be aware of when purchasing a new air conditioning system.
Q. What’s the impact of getting the correct cooling system for a business?
A: Having the correct cooling system installed in a building, from retail spaces to hotels and businesses, is paramount. Not only for ensuring optimum levels of comfort for a business’s customers, but also in making sure that staff are comfortable and satisfaction levels remain high. No one likes working in a stuffy or cold environment!
Q. What warranty cover should business owners be looking for when buying a new air conditioning system?
A: While all new air conditioning units come with a manufacturer warranty, some are greater than others and typically vary from three to seven years. Businesses should also consider the sort of warranty they have. In some instances, while replacement parts may be included, labour might not be. While no one ever envisages a lot of repairs being made, this may be worth investigating up front so that businesses pick the right air conditioning unit for them.
Q. How do businesses know if they are getting a good deal with an air conditioning unit?
A: Aside from looking at your warranty, when conducting a refurbishment or fitting a unit, businesses need to consider two things.
Firstly, how much the initial outlay for an air conditioner costs and secondly, how much it will cost to run the system. Some air conditioning units may seem expensive, but if they use less energy whilst running,

businesses could end up saving money. A good tip to ensure businesses are getting the best value is to combine the initial outlay and estimated running costs over a set period – don’t be blinded by deals that look too good to be true.
Q. How often should an air conditioning unit be cleaned and serviced?
A: It is essential that air conditioning units produce clean and comfortable air when installed in a business. Whether in an office environment or a retail space, if the air isn’t cooling then it could be uncomfortable for staff and impact satisfaction levels.
How often a unit should be serviced is based largely on how much work the actual system itself is doing. If a business requires their unit to run 24/7, then it stands to reason it’s going to require more routine maintenance than a system that only operates in the summer. In this instance, a good rule of thumb for business owners is to schedule for an engineer to come out once a year to run a full-service check.
Q. How do II find the right type of system for my business?
A: There are a lot of different products on the market for customers to choose from, so it’s worth making sure that business owners do their research.
For example, while larger businesses will get the best results from a split-system, designed to cool one or more rooms or an open-plan area, smaller ‘pop-up’ businesses may benefit from a single-unit because of their cost and portability. In particular, if the business address changes they can take it with them easily and efficiently.
