John Kelly, marketing manager at Airfl ow Developments talks about training and why Airfl ow has invested in its Air Academy.
he UK’s ‘fabric fi rst’ approach is vital to ensure energy effi cient buildings. However, as we make buildings more airtight to reduce heat loss and energy bills, indoor air quality can be negatively impacted and building occupants could subsequently suff er from Sick Building Syndrome. To highlight the importance of eff ective ventilation that is both correctly installed and commissioned, Airfl ow has introduced the Air Academy.
Guideline accordance
By ensuring that a fan is installed in line with best practice, installers can provide a reliable, trustworthy service that not only helps guarantee more eff ective indoor air quality for customers but also reduces long-term building maintenance costs for the end client. Installers can off er eff ective on-site testing of existing ventilation systems to see if they are both compliant or could be adapted to adhere to best practice guidelines. This involves measuring air fl ow, and those wishing for detailed information can turn to the NHBC Building
Regulations Guidance Note and BSRIA’s A Guide to Measuring Air Flow Rates.
When it comes to installing a new system, installers can fi nd advice from a variety of trusted sources such as the Domestic Ventilation Compliance Guide, which provides tips that can help avoid an incorrect installation that can severely impact the performance of individual fans or a complete system.
The importance of training
While it is important to keep abreast of the building regulations, compliance guides and best practice processes, it is also valuable to take advantage of training courses. Training courses can provide crucial ‘hands-on’ and practical experience prior to onsite installation, ensuring complete confi dence and understanding of ventilation systems.

products and off ers a range of training courses and conference facilities that can be utilised by trade professionals.
Throughout the Academy, visitors can experience a series of fully operational Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) systems, which helps to reduce ongoing energy bills whilst improving indoor air and also demonstrates the importance of specifying the correct system when the goal is to improve indoor air quality. Phil Berry, regional director South of Electricbase praised the Air Academy, commenting: “We recently used the new Airfl ow Air Academy for a regional managers’ meeting and found it to be outstanding. It proved to be an exceptional venue to learn about the latest technologies in ventilation. The 50 seater conference centre is state-of-the-art and as a training facility, it is second-to-none.”
