From the editor Doctor Who,

now? S

o we have a female Dr Who – how contentious! I’m largely against a minority actor being superimposed

on an established white male character. There are neutral or supporting characters where this works, but mostly the message it sends is that the minority concerned is incapable of establishing a great action character of its own when that’s just not true. For example, Lara Croft is both iconic and a far more powerful role model than a female Indiana Jones could ever be.

But Dr Who is a diff erent proposition – ‘he’ is not human and can regenerate as any human type regardless of race, age or gender, so there is no reason why ‘he’ shouldn’t be a ‘she’ – as The Master has already proven.

This is a TV show that the BBC conceived in the early 1960s to encourage children to become interested in science. If the writers are clever and Jodie Whittaker treats the character well, then this could be a show that encourages young women to take an interest in science, which I think is something we should be promoting.
