Day in the life Up and running

An Anytime Fitness franchisee since September 2016, Paul Woodhouse runs his gym in Grantham. Here, he describes a typical day…

8.30am

I tend to start the day in Loughborough at the family business, Sandicliff e. Sandicliff e is a franchised car dealership group that’s been around since 1948. Our history in motor franchises prompted us to look at further franchise opportunities and, after a lot of research, Anytime Fitness came top of the list. My morning at Sandicliff e is usually taken up with various meetings.

“We are lucky to have a great team with a lot of experience who are very happy working at Anytime Fitness and creating a fantastic atmosphere at the club”

11.30am-1.00pm

The Anytime Fitness day tends to start mid-morning, beginning with a meeting with our solicitor and our fi nance director. With the Anytime Fitness business going from strength to strength, we are looking

into acquiring another existing franchise. This time is spent assessing the information that we have been provided and working out how a deal may work for us and the structure we would like it to take.

1.00pm-2.00pm The drive from Loughborough to Grantham is about an hour. A lot of this time is taken up with a call to our leasing manager at Anytime Fitness who is helping us to source new sites and negotiating deals on properties we are looking at.

2.00pm-4.00pm In the afternoon I have a meeting with Precor, our equipment provider, to discuss the layout of the new club. Along with the fi t-out meetings and getting the opportunity to play around with the plans, I always fi nd it enjoyable to envisage how a grubby warehouse will eventually turn into an industry-leading gym!

4.00pm-5.00pm Not having a background in leisure, I’m trying to practise what I preach and spend an hour a day working out in the gym. I try to follow what a member would do, using a lot of the equipment, going to classes,

and using the showers. I feel this is the best way to identify small tweaks we could make to improve the member experience.

5.00pm-6.00pm

I will spend this time chatting things over with our manager, Steve. There is no formal agenda but we will talk through everything including the supplier of the vending machines, how the staff are getting on, and how we are tracking with our fi nancial key performance indicators. We are lucky to have a great team with a lot of experience in the leisure industry, and who seem to be very happy working at Anytime Fitness in Grantham; this positivity feeds through to our members, creating a fantastic atmosphere at the club.

6.15pm

I try to get home before 6.30pm, as I have three young girls and it’s great to get some time with them. After I put the children to bed, I tidy up my emails and admin from the day, and check the day’s membership sales.
