What type of support have you received from CeX?

All the support I have needed. You get assigned a franchise manager when signing up and they are there for you through thick and thin. It’s been very benefi cial having someone to ask even the silliest questions. I struggled with the fi nancial side of things, having come from a retail-only background, but a course was set up for new franchisees, which massively helped.

What kind of training do new franchisees receive? They receive training in every aspect of the store experience, so everything from customer service to rotas. As an owner, it’s important to have a full understanding of every area of the business.

How long, from having funds available and making enquiries, did it take for your store to be up and running? I made the initial enquiries in July 2015 and the shop opened its doors in June 2016!

Have you had any standout moments? The whole thing has been a standout moment! I’ve come from a very modest background; my family never had much money and we’ve always worked hard for

anything we had, so I never thought I’d be lucky enough to own my own franchise. But I truly believe if you work hard and keep at it, good things will come.

How is it being a female franchisee in this industry and working as a businesswoman in general? I have had to work a little harder to prove myself within the industry. You get a lot of small-minded customers who assume I know nothing about technology just because I’m a woman – some have even refused to be served until they can speak to a man! But once I open my mouth they realise they’re wrong. I try not to let it bother me – if anything it spurs me on. CeX has been nothing but encouraging and welcoming to me, and I know they would like more women to join. Business can be very male-orientated, and, as a woman, I’m in the minority of franchisees, but I’d hate for that to stop any women from pursuing their passion. We all know women are just as capable as men.

What do you enjoy most about your business? I love it! Talking and interacting with customers every day is brilliant, as well as a supportive and competent team of sales

assistants behind me and having corporate on the end of the phone whenever I need them. It’s like a big family.

What sort of person do you think would suit a CeX franchise? You need to love interacting with people as that’s half of your job, you need to be able keep a fun atmosphere in the shop and put in a lot of hard work.

Can you describe a typical day as a CeX franchisee?

A typical day for me would be monitoring and encouraging my staff , a bit of paperwork and number crunching, a lot of emails and making sure my customers are happy!

What are your plans for the future with your franchise? There are a couple of locations in Cornwall I’m interested in, as I’d like my fi rst couple of stores to be close together. After that, the world is my oyster!
