Information security controls standard updated and streamlined

Joy Tan

The information security standard BS EN ISO/IEC 27002 has recently been updated and streamlined to make it easier to use, with a more intuitive user interface. The standard has been updated to

reflect changes to the cyber security landscape, such as the increase in hybrid working initially caused by the Covid-19 pandemic (see ‘Cyber crime fighters’ p16). “The revised controls reflect

the evolution of technologies and industrial practices, including threat intelligence, the use of cloud services and preventing data leakage,” says Joy Tan, Senior Standards Manager, Digital, BSI. “While we were updating the standard, we also saw it as an ideal opportunity to make it easier for people to search for the individual information security controls that are relevant to their operations,” added Joy. The controls have now been

grouped into four thematic clauses;

‘hashtag’ function, for example, if a control is tagged as privacy-related, all the controls under that heading will be listed,” says Joy.

The increased prevalence of hybrid working between office and home has increased the likelihood of cyber attacks

physical; technological; people; and organizational. This makes it easier to identify which aspect of the business each control affects. The new version has 93 controls; 11 new controls, 24 merged controls and 58 updated controls, all providing the most up-to- date guidance.

Users can now search for controls affecting specific parts of their business through the introduction of attributes. Attributes can be used to filter, sort and present controls in different views for different audiences and purposes. “The concept of attributes is similar to that of a

“Our intention is to make the standard more streamlined, versatile and easy to zoom into so users can quickly find what they are looking for. Based on our initial industry engagement, the changes have been positively received.”

BS EN ISO/IEC 27002:2022 is part of

the ISO/IEC 27000 series of standards for managing security risks within the framework of an Information Security Management System. ISO/IEC 27001 Information Security Management was also updated in 2022. Both standards are part of a larger series that also include sector-specific applications.
