Standards can build trust in our digital future


Scott Steedman


Digital and data technologies have tremendous potential to make our lives more convenient and better connected. Digitalisation is sparking and underpinning transformational innovation that will boost productivity and economic growth.


In 2022, the UK became just the


third country in the world to have a tech sector valued at US$1 trillion, and we rank third in the world for investment in artificial intelligence. However with opportunity comes challenge, and the potential downsides of these technologies are already being widely discussed. The risks and benefits of Artificial Intelligence technologies are a prime example, featuring prominently in the media, and being hotly debated, from the board room to the kitchen table. It has never been more important to consider the trustworthiness of these technologies, how they are used, and who is providing them. Equally, responsible application of digital tech could help to ensure


the benefits are felt right across our industries and society. Standards have a vital role to play in supporting these responsible approaches and in shaping and maintaining agreed good governance. In our role as the UK National Standards Body, we are deeply concerned to bring the voice of all our stakeholders to this important debate. We need to blend rigour, and inclusiveness, with dynamism to keep pace with fast evolving technologies and the many areas in which they are used. This edition of Standards Outlook


addresses many of the biggest topics in the digital arena, from Artificial Intelligence and Data Science to the cyber-physical and telecoms infrastructure that enables connection between the digital and physical world. We also consider the vital importance of cybersecurity, and highlight some of the key standards in this space, including the new management standard for
