impacts on people and society to achieve successful outcomes from CPI,” says Sahar. “All these elements need to be brought together to build trust in the adoption of CPI. “This is why BSI stands out from single-industry consortia that would create an industry-focused solution that doesn’t necessarily recognize the needs of consumers and civil society. “Through the Consumer and Public

innovators, academics and businesses to see what standards exist already, how they are being used, where the gaps are that need to be filled, and to create a community of good practice. This concept of convening a multi- stakeholder ecosystem seems to be resonating with government – we are seeing huge support for this approach across government departments.” One of the reasons for this is the
regulatory challenges that emerging technology presents for governments.
“It’s very difficult to regulate emerging technology because of the speed at which it develops,” says Sahar. “Regulation takes time and is limited to national boundaries. With our standards development model and relationship with European and global standards bodies, we can create standards that transcend national boundaries and are agreed global good practice. In order to maximize the benefits of international standards, regulation
needs to be outcomes-based and not too prescriptive. “In a co-regulatory model, regulation sets out high level principles. Standards are a way of helping standards-users meet these principles in practice, and then improve the principles through further iterations.”
The other great advantage of a
strategic approach involving standards is that everybody benefits. “There needs to be broad consideration of the social, environmental and cultural
“People interact with technology in different ways and the way BSI’s standards are developed ensures that all needs are considered, and all voices are heard. This is the benefit BSI can bring to the table when speaking to government and why we are seeing a shift in the way that government recognizes the fundamental role standards play.” In a companion piece, we also consider the role of standards in implementing recommendations from a report on CPI from the Robotics Growth Partnership (see page 11).
