“Engaging people through an online forum enables a dynamic approach to inform the development of standards”

While the potential of AI to improve outcomes in a multitude of areas is enormous, there is justified concern about how to govern this new technology before it becomes ubiquitous. For example, inbuilt bias in data and the development of AI impacts people in their real lives, from individuals being disadvantaged because they don’t fit a certain profile, to facial recognition technology not being developed to recognize darker- skinned faces. The problem for regulators and legislators is that the speed of the development of AI means it’s hard to keep up with that pace of change. This is where standards can play a critical role in tandem with regulation and legislation. They build a consensus of what good governance looks like by consulting experts from all relevant stakeholder groups and they can be published more quickly than regulations and legislation can be put in place. They can also be global in outlook and are flexible

enough to adapt quickly as new innovations emerge.

BSI has joined with the Alan Turing Institute and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) as strategic partners to develop the AI Standard Hub in the UK. The AI Standards Hub creates practical tools for businesses, bringing the UK’s AI community together through a new online platform with materials (e.g., e-learning) to help organizations develop and benefit from global standards. The AI Standards Hub is a

government-backed initiative and is part of the UK’s National AI Strategy. The strategy aims to harness the power of AI to increase resilience, productivity, and growth and encourage innovation across the private and public sectors. The importance of the Hub in supporting business and stakeholders in the UK, as well as feeding into the development of international standards, was recognized in the government’s white paper published

in March 2023, ‘A pro-innovation approach to AI regulation’. “The Hub includes a standards observatory, providing a searchable database on standards in development or published by the main relevant standards bodies around the world,” says Tim McGarr, AI Development Lead, BSI. “There is also a growing repository of relevant AI regulations and policies in development to keep users abreast of what’s happening.”

A further objective is to build an AI community and create an online forum for people to discuss key

topics on AI and standardization. The forums are supported by events and webinars on specific AI topics. Commented Tim, “This is a great way to bring people together to agree on priorities for action, begin to identify early-stage good practice that could feed into future standards, and provide greater awareness of standardization. Engaging people in this way enables a dynamic approach to inform the development of standards”. To kick this off, a series of workshops

were held in 2022 which stakeholders were invited to contribute to, and
