western and south western boundaries of both the National Grid substation and EAOL converter station have been proposed to maximise the screening potential of both developments from Burstall village and residential properties to the west in acknowledgement of the locations of sensitive visual receptors.
Pre-construction Survey 36
A pre-construction walkover survey would be undertaken by the Arboricultural Clerk of Works (ACoW), Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) and an engineer to assist in micrositing the Onshore Cable Route to minimise tree loss. Any veteran trees present within the Development Area would be identified during this survey as well as any tree with bat roost potential. The surveys and assessments would be undertaken pre-construction to provide the works contractor with part of the baseline construction information. The surveys would show actual position of trees and hedges, their condition and value and indicate the extent of root protection zones and all features of bat roost potential. This survey can be conducted at any time of year.
37
The arboriculturalist would define specific mitigation measures to reduce the number of trees to be removed and to protect trees situated in or adjacent to the working width. The arboriculturalist would produce:
Drawings showing typical trench sections and some of the situations where micro siting of the trenches and running track can avoid trees including canopy and roots. An illustrative example is provided as Appendix 3
Arboricultural Implications Assessments (AIA) Arboricultural Method Statements (AMS) Tree Protection Plans (TPP)
Mitigation Strategy, if required, for any loss of veteran trees or trees with veteran characteristics.
38
These would be produced for the onshore cable route to meet the British Standard (BS) 5837:2012 or its updates. These would be issued to, and agreed with, Mid Suffolk District Council and Suffolk Coastal District Council & Suffolk County Council
39
The method statements (AMS) would detail the tree and hedge protection required at the converter station and at each hedge crossing along the cable
