10. Baseline information on wintering birds, including Brent Goose and Avocet, is provided in Section 24.5.2.24 of the Environmental Statement (ES) with further information in Appendix 24.11 Wintering Birds and in the document East Anglia ONE Offshore Wind Farm: Deben Estuary crossing and adjacent cable route - avoidance of potential for impact on SPA and SSSI. The latter document was prepared in 2013 as part of consultation with Natural England (NE) and Suffolk County Council (SCC) in the post submission stage of the DCO application.

Brent Goose

11. The distribution of Brent Geese within the intertidal zone of the Deben Estuary and across the adjacent agricultural land along the cable route was surveyed in the winter of 2011-12 and the information from this site based survey placed into context through an analysis of the distribution of Brent Geese collected as part of the Wetland Bird Survey (WeBS) high tide and low tide counts from recent years.

12. Brent geese were observed on agricultural land throughout the survey area with concentrations in the winter of 2011-12 feeding on areas of estuarine marsh between 500 m and 700 m to the north of the HDD crossing point on the west bank of the River Deben and between 1,600 m and 2,100 m to the south east of the HDD crossing point on the west bank of the River Deben; and feeding on areas of farmland between 1,000 m and 1,500 m and 1,750 m and 2,100 m to the south east of the HDD crossing point on the west bank of the River Deben. The counts from these areas and peak counts of lesser numbers of Brent Geese recorded at other locations in the winter of 2011-12 are illustrated in Appendix 1 to this EcMP.

Avocet

13. The distribution of Avocet within the intertidal zone of the Deben Estuary (none were found on the adjacent agricultural land) was surveyed in the winter of 2011-12 and the information from this site based survey placed in to context through an analysis of the distribution of Avocet collected as part of the Wetland Bird Survey (WeBS) high tide and low tide counts from recent years.

14. Concentrations of Avocet were found in the winter of 2011-12 roosting on areas of estuarine marsh between 500 m and 700 m and between 2,000 m and 2,500 m to the north of the HDD crossing point on the west bank of the River Deben and between 300 m

and 1,200 m to the north of the HDD crossing point on the east bank of the River Deben. Concentrations of Avocet were found feeding on the estuarine flats and in the shallow estuarine waters (ie spanning the River Deben) from where the HDD crossing passes beneath the River Deben to 1,500 m to the north of the HDD crossing point. These areas are illustrated in Appendix 2 to this EcMP.
