The following major soil units are crossed by the onshore cable route:


 Between the landfall and Tuddenham St Martin the soils crossed are Newport 2 (551e) and Newport 4 (551g) associations;


 There is a significant area of Wallasea 1 marine alluvium (813f) on both banks of the River Deben and close to Martlesham Creek;


 Other soil associations present over smaller distances in the eastern half of the route are the Wick 3 association (541t), Burlingham 3 association (572p) and the Hanslope association (411d);


 West of Tuddenham St Martin, the dominant soil associations are the Melford and Ludford associations (map codes 571o and 571x respectively);


 Smaller areas of the following associations are crossed by the western end of the onshore cable route: Burlingham 3 (572p), Beccles 1 (711r), Hanslope (411d), Midelney (813a) and Swaffham Prior (511e); and

22.5.5 Environmental Stewardship Schemes Environmental Stewardship Schemes (ESS) provide funding and advice to farmers,

They are a key tool for the delivery of the Rural Development Programme for England 2007-2013, funded by the European Union and UK Government. The schemes are administered by Natural England for Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).


69. There are four elements to the ESS:


 Entry Level Stewardship: this provides a straightforward approach to supporting the good stewardship of the countryside;


 Organic Entry Level Stewardship: this is the organic strand of Entry Level Stewardship;


 Uplands Entry Level Stewardship: this was launched in February 2010 to support hill farmers with payments for environmental management; and


 Higher Level Stewardship: this involves more complex types of management
