Classification (ALC). It is a national system in which maps have been produced for the whole of England and Wales. The grading system was defined by the former Ministry for Agriculture Fisheries and Food (MAFF) (now Defra), and is described in Table 22.1 in Appendix 22.2. Soils across the onshore electrical transmission works including access range from ALC grades 1 to 4 (Figure 22.2).
62. The onshore cable route runs through a large area of grade 3 land at the landfall, and
a short stretch of grade 2 and 3 land after crossing the River Deben. Near Newbourne and Martlesham the onshore cable route crosses a large stretch of grade 4 land. It then crosses mostly grade 3 land across the north of Ipswich until Little Blakenham. From Little Blakenham, the onshore cable route crosses grade 2 land towards the converter station. At the converter station the majority of land is grade 2, with a small area of grade 3 land to the north. Less than 1% of the onshore electrical transmission works including access is grade 1 land. The percentage of land of different ALC grades within the onshore electrical transmission works including access is presented in Table 22.11.

onshore cable route and at the converter station location. The Soil Survey of England and Wales has produced a series of maps (1:250,000
scale). Sheet 6 covers East Anglia, and shows soils categorised into a variety of soil associations, with information provided on the soil type, parent material (e.g. underlying geology) and likely land uses for the different soils. This map is currently out of print and further soil data will be reviewed for the final ES to allow assessment of new access routes. A Figure of soil type (Figure 22.3) will be produced for inclusion in the DCO application.
65.
At the landfall the predominant soil is Swaffham Prior soil association (map code 511e).
