at Integrated Environmental Solutions, explaining how combining operational data and modelling can achieve ‘great savings’; Richard Caple, Lighting Applications manager at Thorlux, focusing on The application of LED lighting; Martin Cannon, partner at DAC Beachcroft, discussing PFI – An opportunity or a threat to innovation?, and John Prendergast and Sue Holding of Technical Publishing Resources, presenting on Recent HTM and HBN updates. A great mix of real examples Victoria Emerton said: “This year’s conference programme will also feature a great mix of case study presentations from speakers working directly with, and within, the NHS. Delegates will, for example, be able to hear about the exciting project to build a new Proton Beam Therapy Centre at University College London Hospital, and a new orthopaedic centre at Wrightington Hospital in Lancashire. “ProCure21+ has already released a number of Repeatable Rooms and Standard Components, accessible free to all healthcare providers, and has most recently worked closely with the Royal Colleges of Emergency Medicine and Nursing, along with many other stakeholders, to develop evidence-based and experience-grounded Repeatable Treatment Rooms and a Chair Centric Bay,” Victoria Emerton continued. “This recent development work, and final proposals, will be presented for the first time, ready for roll-out, at the conference, by speakers including David Kershaw, P21+ programme director, Balfour Beatty Construction Services UK; Cliff Jones, head of Construction Procurement Team, ProCure 21+/22; Pat Pemberton, senior health consultant, Interserve Consulting, and Rosemary Jenssen, director, Jenssen Architecture.

Catch up with the latest

developments “With the added benefit of five theatres on the exhibition floor offering free content,” the conference director continued, “Healthcare Estates 2016 will be a great opportunity to catch up with the latest developments.”

In the opening keynote on Day 2 of the conference, David Williams, director-general of Finance at the Department of Health, will give the ‘view from the top’ in an address entitled The view of the estate and the contribution of the estates and facilities community from the perspective of the DH director-general with responsibility for NHS finance. His much anticipated presentation will look, in particular, at the

86 Health Estate Journal September 2016 Encouraging response to survey

The results of a survey designed to gauge HEJ readers’ views on some of the most pressing engineering, workforce-related, financial, and demographic issues of the day, launched in May by IHEEM in association with nurse call and patient communications system specialist, Wandsworth Healthcare, are now back, and make fascinating reading. Copies of October’s Health Estate

Journal – which will be widely circulated at Healthcare Estates 2016 – will incorporate a special report detailing the results. The report will also be available from IHEEM’s stands, and from the Wandsworth team in the ‘VIP’ area. The Wandsworth-sponsored survey sought to identify some of the biggest concerns for healthcare estates and engineering professionals, their views on the key day-today challenges, and the level of value they feel IHEEM membership affords. Incorporated in a ‘pull-out’ section in May’s HEJ, the survey covered topics ranging from which geographical areas globally respondents felt were delivering the best healthcare environment, to the key driving factors when investing in new equipment. Respondents were also asked about key engineering issues, broader

demographic/societal issues, and which IHEEM services they were already benefiting from, and what other ones they would most like to see. Craig Willcock, IHEEM’s events and

role of the NHS estates and facilities community in achieving the £1 billion in potential estates-related ‘efficiency savings’ identified by Lord Carter and his team. Immediately following David Williams’ address, IHEEM CEO, Julian Amey – speaking in the Strategy stream – will update delegates on recent collaboration by IHEEM and HefmA to help Trusts meet the key objectives set out by Lord Carter. Cliff Price, director at CPA Solutions, meanwhile, will take a look at What has changed in estate management practice over 35 years?

marketing manager said: “The responses provide useful insights into what healthcare estates professionals feel are the key issues, and their thinking on broader topics such as the comparative performance of healthcare systems overseas, and the barriers to attracting new recruits. We were pleased too to receive valuable feedback on the benefits of IHEEM membership, and areas where we could improve our offering, and we look forward to the survey report’s publication next month.” Wandsworth national sales manager, Darren Beeson, added: “With the healthcare sector’s constantly changing environment, and the pressures from both internal and external forces, the survey provided a strong opportunity for both organisations to gauge the problems, frustrations, and decision- making priorities, of healthcare estates staff within the NHS. “As a leading innovator in nurse call systems, Wandsworth is keen to understand the market’s requirements and solution development needs, to help ensure we develop the appropriate solutions. We were delighted to be involved with this inaugural survey. It afforded both an opportunity for IHEEM members to provide a snapshot of the industry, and for suppliers like ourselves to understand the importance of technology, and where we should be focusing our development.”

Experience from overseas The same ‘Strategy’ stream will also feature two case studies drawing on experience from overseas. In the first, Learning from Ghana – Creating a new healthcare model, Polly Barker, project director at tp bennett and, her colleague, head of Environmental, Matt Jordan, will explain how the architectural, interiors, and town planning practice is working with infrastructure projects specialist, NMSI, and a consortium of UK-based consultants, to deliver six new district hospitals, and upgrade a seventh, for Ghana’s Ministry of Health (GMoH).
