Healthcare Estates Pipeline insulation perfected
Kingspan Industrial Insulation manufactures the Kingspan Kooltherm FM Pipe Insulation System (recently installed at the new BREEAM ‘Excellent’ Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow – see photo), which is claimed to be ‘the thinnest and most efficient product for the insulation of pipework in building services’. Kingspan said: “Kooltherm FM Pipe Insulation features a premium performance, fibre-free core, allowing it to achieve thermal conductivities as low as
0.025 W/m·K. The product has received the highest possible Green Guide summary ratings of A and A+, and delivers excellent fire and smoke performance, with a Euroclass rating of BL,s1,d0, and FM Approval to Class 4924. It is also available as a freely downloadable BIM object.” The system is available with Kooltherm
FireSleeves, which expand in the event of fire, and premium performance Kooltherm Insulated Pipe Support Inserts, as recommended in HTM 04-01.
From advisory services to design, cost, and project management
A multi-professional consultancy serving clients across the built environment, Pick Everard offers a range of advisory, design, cost and project management services, with the ability to develop projects from initial ideas to completion ‘via the quickest and most efficient route’. Its ‘proven track record’ extends across a broad spectrum within
healthcare – including urgent and primary care, mental healthcare facilities, and care accommodation for the elderly. It said: “To maximise use of healthcare buildings and the estate we offer a comprehensive rationalisation service. We can also offer expert procurement advice to secure the best value for money. We understand the pressures of delivery in healthcare environments, and the need to maintain service continuity by sequencing works effectively to avoid any disruption. Our experience speaks for itself – with around 600 healthcare projects delivered successfully within the past five years. “Our healthcare buildings meet clinical briefs, providing high quality environments to support safer and more technologically advanced treatments. By improving the patient experience while delivering best value, our integrated approach achieves this progressive model of care.”
KalGUARD ‘cuts costs and helps Legionella treatment’
‘Scientifically proven’ to permanently prevent limescale formation in hot water systems, appliances, and sanitary fittings, the KalGUARD system from Sentinel Commercial is able to ‘significantly slash energy and maintenance costs, while improving the effectiveness of Legionella treatments.’
The company said: “Limescale has a dramatic impact on secondary hot water systems and appliances, causing poor system performance, repairs, and higher energy bills. British Water estimates that just 1.6 mm of limescale can increase a heating system’s energy requirements by

12%. KalGUARD – comprising a zinc anode unit, water meter, and controller, protects against the effects of limescale build-up, avoiding breakdowns and premature capital expenditure for appliance replacement. It permanently ‘conditions’ water via an electrolytic process, a methodology recommended in the UK Building Services Compliance Guide to Part L. When fitted on a rising main, WRAS-approved KalGUARD provides whole-system protection, and achieves significant savings on consumables, maintenance, and water.” The device has been independently verified by tests at Cranfield University.
Increasing capacity on
constrained sites
The Portakabin Group will showcase its Yorkon off-site solutions. Its team of off-site specialists will be on hand to advise healthcare providers, architects, and contractors, on how to increase capacity on constrained hospital sites – ‘with shorter programme times, less disruption, and greater certainty of completion on time and on budget’. The company said: “Yorkon’s stand will demonstrate the latest advancements in off-site technology. Yorkon off-site solutions offer the unrivalled flexibility to meet almost any design brief, hospital site, and building footprint, with greater efficiency. The approach will reduce programme times by up to 50 per cent, and deliver buildings with improved thermal efficiency, and the assurance of completion on time and on budget. Modular buildings can be rapidly installed in enclosed courtyards, on the roofs of existing buildings, and on steel platforms.” Facilities constructed offsite by
Portakabin can have 12 m clear internal spans up to six storeys high, ‘plus the architectural variety to complement existing buildings, or to create landmark developments for prominent sites’.
Kingspan Industrial Insulation offers ‘high levels of technical support’, with a free Pipeline Technical Advisory Service, as well as Premier and Premier Plus Services, ‘delivering clear advice and guidance at every stage in a project’.
