Healthcare Estates Electrolysed water technology at a reasonabl e cost
Envirolyte machines provide electrolysed water technology for disinfection and cleaning of potable and borehole water, CIP systems, hard surfaces, janitorial services, and ‘even the air we breathe’. John Ware, director of the technology’s UK distributor, which also covers Northern and the Republic of Ireland, said: “Our standard
in-situ machine generates the disinfection liquid, Anolyte ANK; 1,000 litres will cost around £3 to £5 to produce, depending on the price paid for the salt and the kWh
electricity charge. The low production cost challenges the prices being charged for all the other types of disinfection chemicals currently used on water systems.”
Rapid identification of P. aeruginosa
IDEXX will be demonstrate Pseudalert, a system launched in 2014 to facilitate the rapid identification of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) in hospital water systems, which won the IHEEM Product Innovation award that year. The system uses an innovative bacterial enzyme technology to identify bacterial contamination, giving either a presence/absence, or a quantified result, in 24 hours – according to Pseudalert ‘less than half the time taken by traditional agar culture methods’.
The test can either be carried out in a laboratory environment, or set up with minimal capital expenditure within a facility, to enable in-house testing and monitoring of water systems. Pseudalert detects P. aeruginosa at levels as low as 1 cfu in standard 100 ml samples. IDEXX Water is a global provider of water testing solutions ‘that deliver easy, rapid, accurate, and cost-effective information on water quality to laboratories and public utilities around the world’.
Anolyte ANK is hypochlorous acid, also known as Free Available Chlorine (FAC). One litre will dose 1,000 litres of potable water at 0.5 ppm ‘to provide consistent disinfection’. Envirolyte machines are manufactured in Estonia, and use electrochemical activation (ECA) to generate 90 to 95% of FAC, ‘a green, safe, environmentally-friendly, and fully biodegradable product’, at a strength of 500 to 700 ppm, in a neutral pH band of 6.5 to 7.5, to suit the customer’s dosing requirements.
