AFRICA - TANZANIA Te prize fund is allocated at 45 percent of
total sales and distributed to each winning category. Murhandziwa later plans to introduce three
price tiers of Scratch cards known as Kwapu and also a Soccer Pools games called Stryka. Tis will then be followed by an 80/20/10 Keno game. Te Lotto game tickets can be bought for
TZS500 per ticket and can be bought by over 18s at various outlets. Neil Jasper at Gidani International said: “We
have adopted an omni channel approach to retail, using all available channels to allow players to participate. Apart from the traditional retail approach we have integrated to allow players to purchase virtually, ranging from e- wallets such as M-Pesa, Tigo Pesa to our website option which should come online this week. “We will compliment this with additional
retail outlets, mobile vending, mail subscription for those without technology and satellite where conventional Telecoms signal does not provide coverage.” Gidani International is a South African lottery
management company. Gidani’s subsidiaries include Gidani International Malawi, Gidani International in Lesotho and now Murhandziwa Ltd in Tanzania. Together with its associate company Gidani
Global Gaming they develop lottery technology and innovations including POS terminals, draw machines and other key accessories. Until recently Gidani was the operator of
South Africa’s second lottery until its licence expired. Ithuba has since taken over from Gidani after a long drawn out battle in which the Trade and Industry Ministry overturned the SA lottery board’s recommendation to let Gidani continue with the licence. To compensate for the South African lottery
loss Gidani was awarded a five year contract in June last year to operate Malawi’s new national lottery. Malawi last had lottery operations in 2012 and since then the gaming board has been looking for new operators after three licensed firms abandoned the national lottery between 2006 and 2012. Also Gidani has been appointed as technical
and commercial partners for several other jurisdictions including Nigeria (Gablotto) and Cameroon (CamLotto). Winlot Tanzania Limited was the previous
operator of the Tanzanian lottery and were due to offer draw based games and instant lottery games. Tey didn’t however get off the ground with their operations. Winlot was a joint initiative of Indian based
Sugal & Damani Group (SND) and Grenadier Management Limited Kenya. SND Group was founded 40 years ago and is the largest lottery service provider in India with business interests ranging from tourism to hospitality and real estate.

SPORTS BETTING A couple of years ago the online sports market
in Tanzania was still ‘undeveloped’ which many claimed was basically due to the lack of demand. Today although the betting shops still attract players online betting is the new phenomena whilst mobile betting is mostly for the elite as many Tanzanians don’t even own a smart phone. Te number of Tanzanian operators wasn’t
huge and, as most Tanzanians didn’t own credit cards or even bank accounts, depositing funds was also a problem. But as the number of Tanzanian operators increase, so too will the ability to use local mobile payment methods enabling more players to bet. At the moment the numbers are growing
slowly. In 2015 an amendment was added to the Gaming Act Cap 41 which brought in new sports betting regulations mainly including the installation of a management system. Te main
points include: l Every licensee shall use a Sports Betting Management System (SBMS) for record keeping
l Any bets made via phone or internet must
also be recorded.
l All SBMS software is to be supplied by licensed manufacturer or distributor
l Te system will record various data including wager type, amount, odds, venue, date and time.
l Gaming Tax is six percent of total stakes and gaming tax on winnings is 18 percent of net winnings. Meanwhile the main online sports betting
domestic websites include Premier Betting, M- Bet, Supa Bets and Meridian whilst most international operators also accept bets from Tanzania. Meridian is said to be the leading online
sports betting site in Tanzania mainly because it offers better odds than most international sites, accepts Mpesa and Tigo Pesa and payouts winnings quickly. It is apparently user friendly and easy to navigate and you can bet on all types of sports. Also offered are casino games such as live dealer baccarat, slots, table games and video poker. Tey offer more than 1.2 million sports betting
opportunities each month and the pre-match betting solution gives players access to more
