Gambling in Tanzania wasn’t properly legalised until 1992 when the Investment Promotion and Protection Act came into place. Te gaming industry was previously regulated under the Pools and Lotteries Act of 1967 and the National Lotteries Act of 1974 establishing the now defunct National Lottery

2. Slot machines pay TZS16,000 per machine per month


3. National Lottery pays a total of 15 percent tax per lottery (10 percent gaming tax, three percent royalty and two percent gaming levy)


4. Private lotteries pay 10 percent of gross sales.


l Lotteries - Unauthorised lotteries carry a fine of up to TZS1m or up to one year imprisonment. Licences can be issued for public lotteries to raise funds for charitable events or welfare. A national lottery licence may be granted to a suitable company and this shall be owned by the government. Tis permit may extend to a lottery relating to horse or other racing both on course and off course. Lotteries only for those over aged 18. Prize fund is not less than 50 percent.


l Casinos – cannot be sited near places of worships, schools or residential areas. Slots in casinos must have a minimum payout of 80 percent.


l Slot machines – Tese may be provided at commercial or non commercial entertainment locations authorised by the board such as shops or places such as clubs and pubs (with alcohol licence). Te holder of the slot licence must be authorised to own, place and operate slots in the approved premises. Tey can offer prizes or no prizes and only for those over 18 years. Te price of play is TZS200 maximum. Payouts must be a minimum of 75 percent. No more than two slots in a place selling alcohol.
