Flow volume control of natural gas storage

With the demand for gas growing, the storage capabilities for gas are increasingly playing a vital role. In Spanish Vinarós an onshore plant for the treatment and conduction of natural gas ensures that the gas can be effectively transported and stored in a depleted offshore oil fi eld.

The storage terminal operator was looking for a cost effective solution to control the fl ow volume of the natural gas transported from the onshore storage terminal to the offshore platform. This required a redundant fl owmeter for the delivery of gas to the measurement station as well as a site internal fl ow control of natural gas and a measurement of the gas used as fuel for local consumption.

KROHNE OPTISONIC 7300 for fl ow control in gas storage process

KROHNE delivered 3 units of the OPTISONIC 7300 F. One device was installed in a special confi guration as dual universal ultrasonic gas fl owmeter (DN 750) for delivery of gas to the measurement station. The device is capable of measuring a wide fl ow range of

0…900.000 kg/h. A second fl owmeter (DN 600), was used for fl ow control in the gas storage process. A third OPTISONIC 7300 (DN 50), was applied for measuring the local consumption of natural gas as fuel gas.

The 2 beam ultrasonic fl owmeter offers excellent long term stability and repeatability. No moving parts are used and the device doesn’t need recalibration and maintenance. Instead of customising a regular but more expensive CT ultrasonic fl owmeter, KROHNE individually designed the solution according to the non-CT requirements which makes it a very economical device for the customer’s natural gas application.

• Gas transport from onshore to offshore platform

• Ultrasonic gas fl ow measurement for storage and delivery processes

• Accurate alternative to mechanical gas fl owmeters

Flow measurement of slop refl ux at a refi nery A Swedish refi nery produces specialty oils

like Naphtenic oils and bitumen. The refi nery processes heavy crudes to distill their special products. In order to increase distillation ef- fi ciency, they also reprocesses the slop residue of crude oil.

In order to better handle the variability of the slop oil before reprocessing it, the slop refl ux has to be controlled. Slop oil is a thick and vis- cous fl uid, and is recirculated at temperatures up to 400 °C. Depending on the heaviness of crude oil, the slop refl ux can also be corrosive.

OPTIMASS 6400F with insulation jacket and connected to heat tracing system

, FOUNDATION

The refi nery had already used mass fl owmeters from competition. However, as these instru- ments were certifi ed to only 350 °C, they were often failing in the application. The refi nery was therefore searching for a reliable and accurate mass fl owmeter.

KROHNE supplied an OPTIMASS 6400 in stain- less steel (DN 50). The Coriolis mass fl owmeter provides accuracy up to 400 °C. The fl owmeter with twin V-tube design was vertically installed in the insulated slop refl ux line. To ensure the consistently high temperature, the device has been equipped with an insulation jacket and connected to a heat tracing system. The meter allowed for a smooth set up and confi guration. It enabled a seamless integration into the exist- ing DCS and asset management system.

The customer has been very satisfi ed with the OPTIMASS 6400. The meter has provided excellent accuracy and repeatability at high temperatures and handled the specifi c process conditions exceedingly well. This way, the refi nery has been able to model and optimize the distillation unit very effectively.

• Reprocessing the residue of heavy crudes in the production of naphtenic specialty oils

• Mass fl ow metering of slop oil to improve distillation operations

• High Temperature (HT) application with up to 400 °C
