RETAIL & DAYTIME CLEANING
Most washrooms in shopping centres have to cater for a constant stream of visitors. So it can be a challenge to ensure that they are clean, hygienic and pleasant to use at all times while offering a continuous supply of soap, hand towel and toilet tissue.
Long-lasting soap and paper systems that are easy to top up during the course of the day work well in shopping centres. Janitorial staff need to be able to maintain the toilets quickly and unobtrusively to avoid clashing with washroom users and potentially putting cubicles and wash stations out of action.
This means they need to be able to anticipate washroom requirements – even on the busiest of shopping days.
Queues will form if the toilet paper supply has been allowed to run out in one or more cubicles, or if some of the soap and hand towel dispensers are empty. Air dryers inevitably lead to queueing since the hand-drying process takes longer with any dryer – even the fastest models – than it does with a paper towel. Therefore a continuous supply of hand towels will speed up hand-drying and ensure that shoppers are ready to resume their spending in double-quick time.
The high-capacity TorkMatic® dispenser is a good solution in a shopping centre washroom because the unit holds sufficient paper for more than 400 hand dries. This means the risk of paper running out during busy periods is reduced.
A highly suitable soap solution for a retail environment is Tork Foam Soap which comes in long-lasting cartridges that can be changed in seconds. Bulk soap systems take longer to refill and can potentially lead to a mess on the floor or units which will entail further time spent cleaning up.
Toilet paper systems in a shopping centre should also provide a long- lasting supply with minimal risk of run-outs in busy periods. The Tork SmartOne®
for example has been
designed to give out just one sheet of toilet tissue at a time, potentially reducing consumption by up to 40%, which again helps to save maintenance time.

Another good toilet tissue option for a busy shopping centre is the Tork Twin Coreless Mid-Size Toilet Roll Dispenser. This comprises two tightly-wound rolls which are together equivalent to nine conventional rolls. When the first roll has been used up, the second drops into place to ensure a continuous supply.
In more exclusive retail centres and stores where an upmarket effect is desired, a system such as Tork Image Design Line works well. The dispensers combine brushed stainless steel with a black trim to create a ‘wow factor’ among washroom users.
Besides dispensers for toilet tissue, hand towels and soap, the line also comprises a matching tissue box, bin and a coat hook to allow washroom designers to create a co-ordinated look.
It can be hard for maintenance staff to anticipate washroom needs in a shopping centre where the size of the crowds on any given day is impossible to predict. The Tork EasyCube system removes the need for guesswork since the sensors inside the ‘connected’ Tork washroom dispensers will alert maintenance staff immediately via a smartphone or tablet when a dispenser is running low.
Cleaners can then head for the washroom in question and target only those dispensers where refilling needs to take place. And the system incorporates a visitor registration
unit which enables cleaners to find out remotely which washrooms are experiencing particularly heavy traffic. This enables them to carry out extra maintenance checks in high-use toilets and address any potential issues before they can lead to complaints.
Tork EasyCube is compatible with most existing Tork dispensers including the complete Tork Image Design Line and many Tork Elevation units.
Since the advent of the internet we no longer need to visit the shops on a regular basis. It is therefore in the interests of retail managers to encourage us to do so by introducing entertainment and meeting places and by enhancing the surroundings to make shopping centres more welcoming.
On the face of it the washrooms are only a minor part of the equation. But an unpleasant washroom will create a negative effect on shoppers while an overcrowded toilet where long queues are allowed to form will reduce the amount of time they spend on the shop floor.
By equipping toilets with attractive and user-friendly systems – and by making sure they are well maintained and stocked at all times – retail managers will be enhancing the visitor experience while ensuring that people linger longer in the shops.
