46 New Generation High-Torque and High Speed Stirrers Introduced

Wiggens introduces the new generation of high-torque and high speed overhead stirrers with the WB-3000, WB-1800, and WB-6000 series. These units are specifically designed for high torque applications and/or high speed applications where conventional stirrers reach their limit with regard to sample viscosity or speed requirements.

The Wiggens high-torque and high speed stirrers feature a high resolution TFT display which can show not only the current speed and torque, but also the set speed, gear stage, controlling mode and timer settings. All stirrers come with a BLDC motor, which is highly beneficial to the durability of the product. In comparison to AC motors, BLDC motors are more quiet, robust and maintenance free. In addition, all stirrers employ a two stage gear transmission box for optimal processing of high torque at low speeds or lower torque at higher speeds. A special feature is the smart torque adjustment that enables the stirrer to maintain the set speed even if the viscosity of the sample changes during the stirring process. The latest chuck design makes impeller changes easy and guarantees that the impeller sits perfectly.

The housing is made of die-cast aluminium and features heat reduction fins, which contribute to keeping the unit cool in long-term applications. An RS-232 and RS-485 input as well as analogue control make all stirrers highly versatile and adoptable for different applications. Thus, they can be used as a stand-alone unit or, for instance, integrated in chemical reaction systems.

The Wiggens high-torque and high speed series are also available as remotely controllable units, with the stirring and controlling box separated. This makes them an even better fit for integration in reaction systems where the controller is required to be in an easily reachable position.

Compact Combination Freeze Dryer/Vacuum Concentrator

Genevac has announced that its popular miVac SpeedTrap cold trap can now be used for freeze drying or configured as a combined concentration/freeze drying workstation with a miVac vacuum concentrator.

Utilising the updated miVac SpeedTrap with continuous chill mode in conjunction with the miVac Super Vacuum pump, up to 250ml of water, or other solvents such as 1,4- dioxane, may be freeze dried in a single operation. Samples to be dried are simply placed in the rotor of the miVac concentrator and dried at full vacuum. The vacuum boils the samples at below their freezing point, therefore the samples freeze and the ice sublimes away, leaving the sample as a dry powder. To reduce drying times a pre-concentration step, at a controlled vacuum, can be easily incorporated.

The miVac SpeedTrap and Super Vaccum pump may also be used as a stand-alone freeze drier. A range of accessories have been designed by Genevac to allow the SpeedTrap to directly accept pre-frozen samples in either flasks or vials. Simply attach the freeze drying accessory jar in place of the regular SpeedTrap collection vessel. Flasks can be attached to the valves, or vials may be placed directly in the accessory jar, using the holders provided.

Being only being only 212 mm (8.3 inches) wide the miVac SpeedTrap offers a compact and cost effective solution for low volume freeze drying. As a combined system the miVac provides a versatile concentration and freeze drying tool for busy Life Science labs.

UK Health and Safety Laboratory Samples with High-Performance Mass Flow Controllers

The Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL) is the key contributor to workplace and consumer safety. It provides scientific, medical as well as technical expertise to lead research. The capabilities include occupational health, exposure assessment, major hazards and risk management.

HSL runs an atmosphere generation system for recreating polluted atmospheres and accurate loading of standards of hazardous materials such as VOCs. These standards are used for conformity testing by participating laboratories as part of proficiency testing schemes. Axetris’ mass flow controllers provide the high performance and reliability needed to produce such samples. Besides delivering high precision, the MFCs must work across a wide dynamic range to allow different volumes to be sampled onto different tubes in the same time period. Since 2013 the MFCs are being used as part of the atmosphere generation system, and have been very reliable in terms of mass flow reproducibility and robustness.

Launch of the World’s First Intelligent Pipette Stand

Mettler Toledo’s recently launched Rainin SmartStand™ is set to transform pipette management. This intelligent, customisable and highly scalable pipette asset management system is easily adapted to any laboratory’s standard operating procedures, helping to drive compliance in regulated environments, such as pharma, GLP and QC laboratories. Non-regulated laboratories can also take advantage of SmartStand to conveniently and efficiently monitor large numbers of pipettes. Each SmartStand can accommodate four manual or electronic Rainin XLS™ and XLS+™ pipettes, reading the embedded RFID chip to determine the current calibration status, which is instantly and clearly displayed on the colour LCD screen. A detailed view of the pipette’s service history and calibration status is revealed whenever it is removed from the stand, enhancing compliance by minimising the risk of accidentally using out-of-specification equipment.

SmartStand is supplied with EasyDirect Pipette Asset Management software, a flexible, infinitely scalable Windows®-based tool that simplifies and streamlines data management. It can connect to multiple SmartStands simultaneously via Bluetooth®, monitoring anything from tens to hundreds of pipettes, identifying their location and capturing usage data to help laboratory managers reduce asset costs and eliminate obsolete equipment. Customisable fields allow information such as the user and lab, application and ID/inventory number to be entered for each pipette, and transferred to its RFID chip. An interim quick check can be scheduled – enabling deviation from specifications to be identified at an early stage – and service due dates indicated graphically, with the relevant documentation automatically completed and printed. After servicing and calibration, the updated record is conveniently exported to EasyDirect by replacing the pipette on any SmartStand. Data can also be transferred from EasyDirect to Microsoft Excel® and most LIMS applications, eliminating manual record keeping.
