50 year Milestone Announced at Pittcon Merck chose the Pittcon Exposition to announce the global launch of the Milli-Q®
providing ultrapure water to scientists in laboratories all over the world.
“While there have been tremendous advancements in the lab, today’s scientists continue to seek ways to improve reproducibility and reliability of data,” said Udit Batra, Member of the Merck Executive Board and CEO, Life Science. Our customers are looking for compact, ergonomic systems and software so that they can advance science, further faster. Our new lab water system addresses these pain points, allowing scientists to focus on problem solving, without worrying about the purity of their water. This new system refl ects our legacy of pioneering innovations in lab water purifi cation.”
Merck’s leading brand, Milli-Q® water, has become synonymous with ultrapure lab water, and is the most cited brand in peer-reviewed publications. Milli-Q®
tested and designed exclusively for Merck, allowing the company to provide the best water quality to labs across the world. Merck’s Milli-Q® replace the existing bench-top Milli-Q®
Advantage A10 systems. It is now available for purchase.

A selection of high-performance systems and high-value analytical solutions with an emphasis on pharma and applied markets, were a key feature of Bruker’s booth. Frank H. Laukien, PhD, Bruker President and CEO, commented: “At Pittcon 2017 our commitment to developing state-of-the-art systems and innovative solutions for pharmaceutical, applied, neuroscience and nanoanalysis markets is on full display.”
These included the MALDI PharmaPulse 2.0 system enables primary screens of millions of compounds at signifi cantly lower cost, measuring up to 10 different samples per second, a 100- to 1000-fold increase in speed and throughput for mass spectrometry-based, label-free screening, with seamless integration into third-party UHTS robotics solutions. The BioPharma Compass 2.0 is a new solution for biopharma R&D and QC, including wizard-driven workfl ows for monoclonal antibody and antibody-drug conjugates (ADC) characterisation, intact mass analysis, sequence errors, truncations, substitutions and key post translational modifi cations, such as glycosylation. Data can be unifi ed from the most relevant and complementary MS methods for the characterisation of biologics, MALDI-TOF/TOF and ESI-UHR-QTOF.
A portfolio of microESR spectrometers, offering research-grade results in a compact footprint for applied and industrial applications, included the VERTEX 80v FTIR R&D spectrometer incorporating the vertebra THz extension for combined FTIR and continuous-wave THz spectroscopy. New in the microscopy imaging and nonoscience category was the NeuraLight 3D™ an advanced system for optogenetics research to decode neural connectivity and networks. This breakthrough in simultaneous, all-optical optogenetic stimulation and multiphoton microscopy imaging was achieved in close collaboration with leaders in neuroscience research at Stanford University, Columbia University and University College London.

Energy-Saving GC
Ellutia Chromatography Solutions offi cially unveiled the 500 Series Gas Chromatograph which can perform conventional and fast gas chromatography with an air blown oven and Ultra-Fast Chromatography with directly heated columns.
In ultra-fast mode, metal capillary columns are directly resistively heated, allowing a number of benefi ts including greatly increased ramp rates and upper temperature limits, as well as decreased cool down times and reduced energy consumption. All of this combines to reduce cycle times by up to 10 times, whilst only using a fraction of the energy a conventional GC would require. The company also displayed the compact 200 series GC and the 800 Series Thermal Energy Analyser, a highly sensitive chemiluminescence detector for nitro, nitroso and nitrogen containing compounds.
Philip James, Managing Director at Ellutia commented: “When operating in conventional GC mode, the 500 series uses its compact air blown oven and patented low energy heat recovery heating system to deliver industry standard performance whilst greatly reducing energy consumption for chromatographers. We are pleased to take our technology to the next stage and be able to offer our customers the opportunity to perform ultra fast GC.”
He added: “Pittcon is always such a worthwhile experience where we can meet with many industry experts and discuss the wide range of challenges involved in providing innovative chromatography instruments to a broad range of markets from education and brewing, to materials testing and forensics.”
