All the media, instruments, pipettes, tubes and blades used by the researchers in their experiments must be sterilised before use to ensure the scientific integrity of results. In addition, much of the waste from the laboratory has been exposed to viruses or blood samples and needs to be decontaminated according to

procedures set out for Biohazard Group 2 material. Providing this vital decontamination and sterilisation are two Astell Scientific 735 litre square chamber autoclaves, whose large capacity enables them to complete the daily loads in one cycle. Waste decontamination takes place in one unit in the morning and sterilisation of new media in the other in the afternoon. This procedure keeps the process simple and eliminates the possibility of accidental cross contamination. The two new Astell autoclaves were adapted to be installed side by side with custom-designed fascia panels providing a neat, hygienic finish.

Principal Laboratory Manager Vipul Bhakta is pleased with the tailor-made solution. “We replaced two 10-years-old Astell units that had given excellent service”, he said, “the new autoclaves have password-protected cycles that ensure efficient sterilisation of all our loads.” And the equipment is supported by Astell’s customer service network through local UK based engineers to ensure speed of response should operational issues arise.

Non-Ducted Cabinet Enables Development of Infectious Disease Diagnostics

Leading multinational life sciences tools and diagnostics developer, QuantuMDx has invested in the Asynt professional range of non-ducted laboratory filtration and fume cabinets which sit directly on benchtop surfaces. QuantuMDx purchased the cabinets to aid the development of their portable diagnostic device Q-POC, which will provide sample-to-result diagnostic and drug susceptibility testing for a range of diseases in under 20 minutes by the patient’s side. The device is due for commercialisation in 2018.

Asynt non-ducted filtration and fume cabinets employ extra-large capacity activated carbon filters for removal of fumes and/or HEPA filters for particulate removal. The filters are up to 30% bigger than that of rival systems and also significantly deeper making fume removal more efficient, effective and therefore delivering improved safety. Providing full compliance with COSHH regulations, the airflow in Asynt non-ducted cabinets is constantly monitored and the user alerted by audible and visual alarms should the airflow fall below optimum levels. All Asynt non-ducted fume cabinets come with an industry- leading 5 year warranty. This means Asynt will warrant units to be free from defects in materials or workmanship for a period of 5 years from the date of delivery.

Dr Sam Bhatt, Senior Scientist at QuantuMDx Group Ltd, commented: “Having reviewed the market for what was available, the Asynt professional range of non-ducted laboratory filtration and fume cabinets were a clear choice because of their excellent filtration performance, operational safety features, build quality and reliability.” He added: “The technology being established by QuantuMDx is paramount to the improvement of healthcare systems in clinics and hospitals in low middle income countries. The possibility of medics carrying out rapid disease diagnostics in minutes, in the field, leads to an exciting future in DNA analysis utilising miniaturised portable devices.”

Safety Storage Cabinets Minimise Risk in the Event of Fire

asecos allows a secure and proper storage of hazardous materials and flammable liquids within process areas, workrooms and laboratories with its Q-CLASSIC safety storage cabinet. The improper storage of flammable liquids such as paints, solvents or petrol involves a high risk in the event of fire. Therefore, asecos developed a type 90 safety storage cabinet for the storage of flammable liquids. The marking ‘Type 90’ means that the cabinet withstands fire over a time period of up to 90 minutes and the flammable liquids stored inside remain safe and perfectly intact.

Type 90 safety storage cabinets offer maximum protection for staff, property and environment because the 90 minutes fire resistance provides sufficient time for evacuation, potential fire-fighting measures and rescue operations.

The extremely robust safety cabinet series Q-CLASSIC according to European Standard EN 14470-1 is available in widths of 60, 90 and 120 cm. The triple hinged doors with scratch and impact resistant surfaces remain open in any position and are self-closing in the event of fire.

Furthermore, the cabinets are equipped with a secure cylinder lock as well as an advanced ventilation system. An integrated transport base guarantees a high flexibility in cabinet location and allows an easy movement. The wide range of interior equipment options makes it possible to maximise storage space based on the size and volumes of all containers used.
