Going Out - Page 49 SAMM AGM 2017
The AGM of the Sailing Association Mar Menor was held at Las Claras Social Centre recently and celebrated the 10th year of the organisations existence. 2016 was recorded as a notable year with both ups and downs and these were reflected in the year end reports presented by the Commodore, Treasurer, Secretary and the other officers.
The main ‘down’ were the changes forced by the closure of the jetty at CTD for safety reasons. The ‘ups’ were the acquisition of a new engine 40hp Suzuki outboard for the support boat, a Whaly 430 Pro, the success of the race program, good PR coverage and excellent social activities, the Spring Bash, Caldero Day, Valentine's and Christmas Parties, bike rides and petanque.
Some officers stood down and their replacements were elected. One of those standing down after three years as both General Secretary and Race Committee Secretary was the very popular Maggie Blinkhorn. Much to her surprise, Commodore Paul Shard presented Maggie with a large bouquet and a 250€ travel voucher that had been purchased with the generous donations made by club members as a thank you for all her hard work. Maggie plans to continue helping SAMM as a member of the Social Committee.

www.sailingmarmenor.com. Titanic: Ship of Dreams
Written and directed by Nick Moore, this play narrates the fateful tragedy of many 1st, 2nd and practically all 3rd Class passengers on board the Titanic in April 1912. Through a well put-together script, unforgettable songs and stunning choreographies, Titanic takes us to the magic of a 1st class ballroom and the harsh reality of the stokers who worked in 49º heat.
With a cast of 30 magnificent actors and actresses, sensational period costumes and props designed by Dennis Carpenter, this show set a milestone when first presented as our Black Box opener in 2012. Don’t miss the opportunity to see one of the best musicals ever put on our stage.
The shows will be at Networks Theatre on Thursday 6th, Friday 7th and Saturday 8th of April at various times. Check
www.networkstheatre.com for the complete schedule and to book your tickets. Ticket price 8€ adults and 4€ children/students.
The Royal British Legion Torrevieja Branch presented with Recruiting and Retention Award
The District North Recruiting and Retention Award is presented annually to The Royal British Legion Branch with the most improved membership over the previous three years. The Award for 2016 was presented to Torrevieja Branch by the National Chairman, Terry Whittles.
Gerry Lynch, Chairman of the Branch said he was thrilled to have received this Award, which came as a complete surprise and would be a great boost to the Branch. He paid tribute to his hardworking Committee and the very supportive members. Our events are always well attended and we regularly welcome new members to the Branch. We are a ‘happy’ Branch and have been established in Torrevieja for 26 years, being the very first Branch in District North.
Peggy Wyatt, Principal District Recruiting Officer, said she was delighted that Torrevieja Branch had been recognised. It is testament to all the hard work undertaken over the years. They are a friendly Branch and this has borne fruit when it comes to recruiting. They have also taken great steps to retain their members, some of whom holiday in the area.
The Branch meets on the 2nd Friday of the month at Casa Ventura, La Siesta, Torrevieja 6.30pm for 7pm. For further information please contact the Membership Secretary, Pauline Grindlay on 96 670 4146 or email:
