Pilates changed my life when nothing else had worked By Natalie Young
After struggling with chronic back pain for nearly 5 years and having tried pretty much everything medication wise, including holistic treatments, different sorts of exercises and seeing many doctors and specialists, a friend recommended that I try Lorraine’s Pilates class. I had nothing else to lose, so I did. Lorraine was so different to other instructors whose classes I had attended. I felt safe in her class regarding my back issue, she really seemed to know her stuff. I trusted her almost immediately. I started slowly using the easier exercise options that she suggested and I tried to attend twice a week, gradually building up my confidence and strengthening my core and my back. Within 3 months I came off all the medication that I had been on for years. I realised that the only
thing that had saved me from being in pain was Lorraine’s Pilates classes, so I attended religiously, up to three times a week. Lorraine encouraged me and supported me throughout, carefully gauging my progress. After 18 months I started to add other exercise classes into my routine, as I was then strong enough. And I decided to become an instructor myself as it seemed like the logical thing to do as I had grown to love Pilates so much. It had changed my life when nothing else had worked.

Erratum: We wish to apologise for incorrectly naming the photos featured in last month’s Female Focus. The top photo last month showed Lorraine Young and it was the bottom photo that showed Jill Williams – the lady who had turned her life around by becoming a Pilates instructor. Pictured below and right is Lorraine, teaching one of her classes at Footworks in Jávea.
