Divorce rates hit record low
Divorce rates are at a 40-year low, but there’s been an increase in couples seeking legal expertise regarding marital issues according to leading family law experts Banner Jones. Banner Jones divorce and
family lawyer Toby Netting said: “National divorce statistics may be at a 40-year low, but the number of couples in the region seeking legal advice following the demise of a relationship is not showing a similar decline. “One of the main reasons is
the increased popularity of co- habitation, by which couples live together, buy houses together, pool assets and, in many cases, have children together, without choosing to tie the proverbial. “Our role is to ensure we
gather all relevant information and advise the client on the various mechanisms available, helping identify the best course of action for them and their families through what can be an incredibly difficult time.”
Be smart about social media in the workplace
Kelly Pashley-Handford (pictured), Chartered MCIPD,Human Resources Manager at Spencers Solicitors, looks at the risks associated with social media misuse, and how to avoid it.
The use of social media in the workplace has increased significantly and many businesses now actively encourage employees and clients alike to engage with social media. After all, the best advocates for any business are usually its employees and satisfied clients. Of course, while social media can
create numerous opportunities, it can also present a minefield of challenges, particularly for smaller businesses, with a raft of potentially damaging consequences. It’s widely reported that misuse
of the internet and social media by workers costs Britain's economy
billions of pounds every year, with many employers wrestling with issues including lost productivity, defamation and cyber bullying. So, what can you do to
safeguard your business against potential social media pitfalls? In a nutshell, implement and
regularly review your social media policy. A simple, well drafted policy can provide guidance and clarity for employees who use social media on acceptable use and what is and isn’t permissible and proactively prevent issues by setting clear parameters and expectations. It can also reduce lost time and productivity from unauthorised use.
Your policy can also support
business objectives and enhance brand awareness - for example, by directing employees on how they can use social media to promote the business - and mitigate risks and legal exposure associated with misuse. In practice, what should a social
media policy include? As with any policy, it should be
tailored to the needs of your business. However, as a general guide, social media policies should include: • An introduction which outlines the approach to social media and what is covered under the policy. Although you may cite
